I watched a War Drummer video re SerialBrain2’s theory that I think explains Sessions perfectly. Had Trump chosen someone other than Sessions who could NOT recuse himself, the DS talking points would be that Trump was using that AG to control the outcome of the investigations to his liking. Trump needed the public to see that he is not steering the outcomes so he chose the one person who COULD recuse himself - Sessions. As he is recused, Sessions cannot comment or even review the case information. It’s the best possible optics. And I think Trump specializes in optics. :D

Further, the Dems like Sessions to stay too. The left has organized “protests” to occur if certain “red lines” are crossed. They claim they have 350,000+ “reservations” for people to protest immediately in pre arranged locations if Mueller is fired, Rosenstein is removed, people involved in the case are pardoned by Trump. But when it comes to Sessions, the organizers of the protest say they will “increase” their organizing efforts? Wut? They want Sessions to stay and they are not trying to smear him (too much) or claiming he’s biased etc. The optics are lining up for Trump quite well. :D

Anybody in the campaign would have the same recusal baggage, Giuliani for example.

Whether he actually feels he succeeded or not, I think Trump (and others around him, including Sessions) tried to choose the best/right person for each key position. In some cases the plan likely was a "hatchet man, replacement" "bing-bang" plan. Tillerson as SoS for example.

One beauty of actually following the rules, trying to restore objectivity to DOJ, FBI, the Courts, and other highly politicized institutions, is that Trump will not be controlling - his role is to faithfully execute laws, to defend the country, and to develop and implement foreign relations. The role of the executive.

Back to the main point though, Sessions was a good pick to head DOJ. He was a DOJ insider before he was a Senator. He's not as dull as most people think.
