The cover story for pulling the app was that Apple and othetrs were profiting from (and therefor implicitly endorsing) the spreading of false news/conspiracy.

I read that differently, and take it as meaning the planning has been going on for 3 years, not that it was planned to take three years to execute. I just re-read that whole drop and still feel my initial interpretation is correct. Change my mind.
