The hunt began after rumours of a large dark tail spotted near a local boat ramp
Must make putting in and taking out your boat a bit more exciting than here in the US.

We’ve got 17ft gators here in Georgia down in the Okefenokee.
15ft isn’t that big. There have been reports of 23ft Crocs in Australia.
But, gators are laid back and as long as they are well fed, they will leave you alone.
Croc will bite you in half just for snoring to loud.

The croc caught in the Philippines named Lolong was 20.3 feet or over 6 meters. I watched video of villagers trying to move him. He broke the cart they put him on.

4.71 meters is 15.45276 feet long. Certainly not the largest crocodile ever captured. Actually not even in the top 10:
Top 10 Largest Crocodiles Ever Recorded
The largest was:
No. 1: Lolong (6.17 meters/20 feet 3 in) the largest crocodile ever measured:
What about Krys, the Savannah King?
According to a story, a giant crocodile was shot was near Normanton, Queensland, Australia. In the Norman river It was shot in July 1958, and nicknamed Krys after the person who shot it. It was claimed at 28 foot 4 inches (8.64 meters) there is a life size replica of it at Normanton, Queensland, Australia.
Zoologist Adam Britton says: Ive never counted Krys because its just a story theres no evidence at all to back it up, and it just seems so far outside the maximum possible range for this species that Id need some pretty solid evidence to believe it. Thats why it never appears in any official statistics.

“There had to be a lot of the early settlers get eaten before they figured out the things were dangerous. Lots of things are extremely dangerous.”
Yes, I’m sure the first few settlers to have seen a 15+ foot long toothy reptile initially imagined them to be cuddly little fuzz balls. Many settlers were eaten while trying to pet or domesticate these creatures until word got out. It took a bit though, for word to get out, as those who realized their error were consumed.
Aussie settler #1: Where’s Bruce?
Aussie settler #2: Dunno, last I seen ‘em, ‘e said ‘e was gonna ride that big thing down by the river.
Aussie settler #1: Crikey, that’s bollocks!

Not the same thing. These guys were looking for an elusive croc, the military was looking for a guy already dead.
