How about this pure speculation: they never had an affair. They worked as very close partners in a pair of critical projects. The partnership provided an otherwise wholly impermissible end run around Priestap and other FBI leadership and a direct and inappropriate connection between prosecutor and investigation outside the normal governmental structure. They supposed affair is a cover story for why they were routinely violating the normal chain of command, supported only by the occasional somewhat emotional texts you’d expect between two close partners, and as far as I’ve seen none of the kind of texts that would be specific to an actual affair.

I too have problems with the whole affair story.
What I have a hard time believing is that two work colkeagues, both of whom were married to others, would have endless texts about topics that primarily seem to be about work.
What I don’ t see is any evidence of passion, or interest in the personal well being of the other.
Something doesn’t compute.
