Why Phil Mickleson should apologize then withdraw from the U.S. Open
ESPN.com ^ | Ian O'Connor

Posted on 06/16/2018 5:25:51 PM PDT by Hebrews 11:6

I'm sorry.

Those are the first two words Phil Mickelson should say publicly Sunday morning after a fitful night of sleep.

I withdraw.

Those are the next words Mickelson should say on his way out of the U.S. Open and into a better and brighter tomorrow.

Mickelson made a mockery of his sport's national championship on his 48th birthday, and he should now do the honorable thing and remove himself from the tournament.

He hit his moving ball out of frustration on the 13th green at Shinnecock Hills, and then told a counterfeit tale about his intent. Mickelson said he took a strategic whack at his rolling putt as it headed downhill to accept the two-stroke penalty rather than risk playing the ball conventionally and taking a score more damaging than the 10 he posted on the par 4.

You should understand the posts before butting in. I was the one that introduced EXCEPTION 1 on this thread.

Perhaps YOU haven’t read all the replies here?

” I don’t think you are a golfer based on your comments in this thread)..”

DUDE, back that up!

Wow, looking at the Headline I thought Phil took a Knee during the National Anthem.

Then I realized if that happened the Author would be praising Phil instead.

“There was NO rampant cheating.”

What words would you use if Tiger did it?

I agree with your assessment of the Masters. That is the greatest golf course in the world in my humble opinion. Though it is closed to us regular folks (we ain’t rich enough or big wheels enough) to get in, I love the course. The holes with the flowers, creek and bridges are the most beautiful to the eyes on any course I have seen. The ones along the coast at Pebble Beach are great also. Can’t beat the crashing waves against the rocks while along those holes. I went to a military law course out at Monterey back in the 1980s and a group of us went out and drove through that area. You entered at a gate house and actually had to pay to drive around the road that went along the golf course, those mansions along the course, and sights there, and then you exited out another gate. I have a great photo of the Lone Cyprus that is growing on that rock along the coast.

He did, but they told him to play.

Yeah, I know the US Open always wants courses like you are playing in a gravel pit. The greens were like putting on a concrete pad, and the fairways were NOT FAIR by any means!! It was really a retched tournament for the “eyes” to behold. I like to see players make great shots and the ball actually stay where they hit it. I like to see nice long drives that you don’t have to hit it in a fairway that is 15 feet wide. That is why Augusta is the best course in the world in my humble opinion. Simply the best.

The two leaders were in 45th place starting today. It’s unfair that the course was playing five to six strokes easier when they played earlier today.

Although I'm not an azinger fan, he summed it up best. The USGA goofed with pin placements Saturday not expecting the wind to come up and they were in poor areas for that weather given the quickness of the greens the wind dried them out and made them quicker.

For tournament play, no question about it. I would love to see a tournament played at Pine Valley.

The USGA agonizes about the pros shooting low scores.

But the fans who pay the bills could care less.

When I was young I caddied and played a lot of golf. Long drives, good short game and I could putt.

My son recently bought me some clubs and so we've played a few times but I've watched golf since Tiger put golf back into play.

There was something wrong with the cups all over the course.

A putt would be on line get with 3" to the cup with perfect pace and it'd turn left/right. Almost like they pulled up the grass around the cup when they set it.

Not excusing Phil but he didn't break his putter over his knee or throw it into the lake.

That putt was not like those I described but I didn't see the whole 4 rounds but any earlier weird cups could maybe set a frustration level.

Phil is good for the game and an exceptional golfer - to trash his career for a no harm-no foul goof when he was clearly out of the run would be unconscionable.

From above:

14-5. Playing Moving Ball A player must not make a stroke at his ball while it is moving

PENALTY FOR BREACH OF RULE 14-5 or 14-6: Match play – Loss of hole; Stroke play – Two strokes

Wasn’t the US Open a couple or three years ago, where Jordan Speif (cannot spell his last name) won, in Seattle, that was an old gravel pit or something like that and it only had that one tree near one of the tee boxes. Lone Tree or something they call it. That was a hard course also, up and down and around. Not one part of it level.

Well, I’m not a DUDE, first of all. (Had you read MY post about Maryland Military Ladies long drive, you might have caught that....)

Second of all, your blatant lack of knowledge about the rules of golf throughout this post tells me that you may hit a golf ball on a golf course, but that does not make you a golfer. :)

Hopefully that answers your question?

Oh, indeed Sir I have read all the replies.

Your comment “Nope” that no other rule applies is incorrect, as I explained in my post to you.

Also, “butting in” doesn’t apply on a public forum. Nowhere did I read that this was a (misguided) discussion between TexasGator and only those you agree with.

You arrogant ***. You butted in without understanding the thread and added words to my post to change the meaning!’
