Part of the problem is that we have to conform the ISO QA, along with PCI, GDPR, and who knows what else (we have business in North, Central, and South America, EMEA, and APAC.) We've got custom, in-house written applications, off-the shelf apps, SaaA applications, and have to interface applications with many hundreds of other vendors' systems. I know that they've been working on getting Windows 10 certified on desktops, laptops, and VDI on BOTH VMware and Citrix for over a year now, with all the apps.

A sheltered life? LOL!

I’ve used just about every configuration out there, from just about every different brand of PCs and smartphones and tablets.

Not only that, I’ve been a developer for most of my working life, including mainframes and mini-computers and PCs. Seen it all, and developed for many different types of companies and many varied applications. Sheltered? I would think not.

I just happen to know what the heck I’m doing.

“Win 7 Pro 64 here.”

Ditto. I think that people who are OK with 10 are younger and never have been into high production computing. Any small process that took one or two actions to complete in XP, Vista, and 7, takes five or six now — if it can be done at all.

I guess I've been lucky - the laptop I have hasn't had any issues (except I had to update the BIOS before one of the updates could install) with anything they've sent down the pike.

Just about ready to go with LINUX though, if for no other reason than Windows now probably has more ways of collecting data than any of us know.

I need to start migrating to Linux. You said that Linux Mint 19 will be out soon. What version of Mint should I be looking at? There are different versions for the desktops.

Same here, though I have a Windows 10 install that I’ll putz around and experiment with from time to time.

I’m not an expert. I only know from personal experience dealing with my own situations.

I’ve found that Linux Mint 18 of various levels once installed on desktops of varying hardware (all > 5 yr old) and not pushed too hard (don’t try to simultaneously load multiple apps) gets my needs done.

Setting it up is not trivial as some hardware needs proprietary drivers (new video cards in my case).

Getting VirtualBox VMs setup to work with the actual desktop’s hsrdware requires research and fiddling, but once done is awesome tech.

I don’t see any v19 features that would push me to update from 18.

I did have some issues with shutdown hosing the system when using SSDs. I never got that sorted out as I went back to spinning drives and put up with slower, but reliable loads/shutdowns.

At the moment I’m entirely satisfied and can get everything I want done without the hassle of spending all day on M$ updates.

YMMV

HP support framework software(which allows better operability and updating between computer and other HP devices) isn’t playing nice with windows 10. It was causing my wife’s hp laptop to run with 90 per cent cpu resources and 50 per cent memory. The lap top would just hang on any app she tried to run or with internet browsing( chrome). I disabled it from running via task manager and the hang ups stopped. The framework software was made in 2016 and hasn’t been updated by hp; so when this latest windows update came out, the hp support framewok and windows 10 decided not to be friends! Probably explains your faxing issues.

My local Geek Squad is pretty good. I don’t use the online thing - that is not good. My problems are generally pretty simple and the guys in the shop do a pretty good job. I’m not a high tech guy so I’m probably more easily satisfied and unaware of issues than others. But I do have to honcho their work. The guys in the back are pretty good, but communication between the front desk and the back isn’t always the greatest, so I have to ensure the back is doing what I want. For me that’s better than me trying to fix it myself.

Anybody who plans to remain with Win7 after Jan 2020 (when security updates stop) should:

The above is not a guarantee of safety. It's just basic common sense.

Anyone who continues using Win7 after Jan 2020 to surf the internet is sleeping with prostitutes, hoping they won't catch something. It's not a question of "IF", it's a question of "WHEN".

I’d venture an educated guess that most of the people who insist on staying with Windows 7 after January 2020 aren’t going to be technical enough to do use a different OS or use virtual Box to create and use a VM to access the internet with .......

Cinnamon.

The previous times I tried Linux I used KDE.

Cinnamon is supposed to be a closer UI to Windows. I have been able to get Cinnamon to crash twice, but no losses nor lasting effects.

The safest way is to get a different HD to load from scratch.

If anything doesn’t work out, just put the old HD back in. (though the first thing I learned when I got my first PC in ‘92 is that it’s best to have two, so one can use one to get information and files to fix the other. My desktops now have HD trays so it’s easy to swap out the drives.

My Win7 laptop already has an XP VM to use with a vehicle CAN bus USB interface whose s/w doesn’t like Win7.

I haven’t seen a killer app nor hardware that I want that needs Win10.

I’d guess that most casual users have already gone to iPhones and iPads.
