University of Chicago eliminates SAT/ACT requirement
Chicago Tribune ^ | 6/14/2018 | Nick Anderson

The University of Chicago will no longer require ACT or SAT scores from U.S. students, sending a jolt through elite institutions of higher education as it becomes the first top-10 research university to join the test-optional movement.

Numerous schools, including well-known liberal arts colleges, have dropped or pared back testing mandates in recent years to bolster recruiting in a crowded market. But the announcement Thursday by the university was a watershed, cracking what had been a solid and enduring wall of support for the primary admission tests among the two dozen most prestigious research universities.

The private university in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood admits fewer than 10 percent of applicants and ranks third on the U.S. News & World Report list of top national universities, after Princeton and Harvard and tied with Yale. It has required prospective freshmen to take a national admission test since 1957. Before that, it screened applicants with its own tests.

U-Chicago is also expanding financial aid and scrapping in-person admission interviews, which had been optional. Instead, it will allow applicants to send in two-minute video pitches, in an effort to connect with a generation skilled at communicating via cellphone clips.

"Testing is not the be-all and the end-all," said James G. Nondorf, U-Chicago's dean of admissions and financial aid. He said he didn't want "one little test score" to end up "scaring students off" who are otherwise qualified.(snip)

With the change in admissions policy will come a significant boost in financial aid. The university is announcing a guarantee of free tuition for students from families with income under $125,000 a year. For most students with annual family income below $60,000, financial aid will cover tuition, fees, room and board. U-Chicago's full price for students without aid is more than $70,000 in the coming school year.

So that cheapens a college degree yet again.

Funny thing is that this still won’t move the meter on outcomes like they want.

It is both, there are tons of posts and articles about the declining value of a University degree as in large part virtually all instruction is done by Educrats that have never worked a day in their lives in the discipline they teach. And in addition, many of the classes are conducted by lesser non professors as the big cheeses are writing papers under the Publish or Perish dictum that permeates the Edutocrcy in general

All the kids from the New England prep schools. Phillips Exeter, Choate, St Paul’s, Groton, Hotchkiss.

There are tons of them. Boarding and Day Schools.

They take it much more seriously than the typical Midwest schools.

Chem Prof here and first generation college student (Class of 1972). When I first heard of the SAT my reaction was “you mean there is a test with right and wrong answers and how much you get right is your score?” and “ there’s no way to adjust for who your old man is or how much you suck up to teacher?”

That’s all I ever wanted in demonstrating my worth. This stuff makes me sad.

"With the change in admissions policy will come a significant boost in financial aid."

Wow! A mere five paragraphs down. I would have thought they would have put this in small print as a footnote at the end of the piece.

While their at it they should probably get rid of that outdated requirement of graduation from high school since it only serves to further White Privilege and unfairly places at a disadvantage People of Color.

My son goes to a top Day School in Cincinnati. But I know that programs at the schools I mentioned above take things to the next level.

I am hoping for a Top 50 school, but he’s really got to work at it! A lot of competition at the top tier schools.

As I’m sure you know, with all the great schools near you!

Brilliant. A shithole university in the making. Shows the racism of low expectations better than the most bigoted person could possibly articulate.

They didnt say how many of the < $125000 kids would be let in. College is turning into a high priced joke anyway. Tradesmen make a lot of money if they do good reliable work and are honest.

Don’t kid yourself.

Chicago might make the SAT “optional” - but if you’re white, you had better take it.

It’s a huge problem for elite schools - how to admit the best whites while achieving the correct ratios.

If Chicago admitted 5 whites without SAT scores, I’d be surprised.

Funny!!!

I guess we are out then!!!

I just hope my son finds a place he can be challenged and succeed on merit and not on political views.

I agree with it. If there had been no SAT/ACT when I was in high school, I would’ve studied a lot harder, which would’ve not only meant that I would’ve learned a lot more, but also that I would’ve developed some grittier habits that would’ve served me better later on. Instead, I sort of knew from the preliminary tests that my scores were going to be able to get me to where I needed to go, regardless of how little I applied myself in classes.

Univ of Chicago used to be a prestigious school ...

Yes indeed. Enrico Fermi, Milton Friedman, et. al.
I agree this is all about Blacks and Hispanics not passing the test.

Comedian David Steinberg is an alum. When asked why he became a comedian and director his response was "As a freshman I noticed that there were exactly five attractive women on the University of Chicago campus, and they were all in the theater program."

It's just gonna go full "melanin requirement".

I'd stay off bridges and out of high buildings in the not too distant future. If there are any newly built, that is.

cost of 4 year college is one of real problems and lack of diversity of those teaching the programs - no critical thing taught - since only liberal views allowed, no freedom of speech - those are the real problems of higher education - oh yes there is discrimination of Asian and whites to be sure...we have Asian American rising sophomore now in college - we know!

” as it becomes the first top-10 research university to join the test-optional movement.”

Research university...one of the latest buzzwords. Only meant to provide higher salaries to professors who don’t teach, and to add another layer of highly paid bureaucrats to the university.

And the students gain little to nothing, and get taught by grad students.
