There’s been a defect embassy in Taiwan since the recognition of the PRC. It’s called something else, but it has been manned by “retired” military, state, and intelligence personnel since the 70s.

I met the equivalent of the Naval Attache when I was there in the 80s on a language study trip with USNA as a Mid.

Not a huge secret - just not an official embassy publicly.
