The United States is in the grips of a free-speech paradox. At the same time that the law provides more protection to personal expression than at any time in the nations history, large numbers of Americans feel less free to speak. The culprit isnt government censorship but instead corporate, community and peer intimidation.
Conservatives can recite the names of the publicly shamed from memory. There was Brendan Eich, hounded out of Mozilla for donating to a California ballot initiative that defined marriage as the union of a man and woman. There was James Damore, abruptly terminated from Google after he wrote an essay attributing the companys difficulty in attracting female software engineers more to biology and free choice than to systemic discrimination. On campus, the list is as long and grows longer every semester.

Germans are worse!.....................A+..............
I see you learned something today.
Free speech is a right, not a guarantee. It doesn’t guarantee you an audience.
LOL. The NYT “conservative” houseboy brays on about Free Speech as if a private organization has to give it to its employee. Hey David, can you write anything you want and get it published by the NYT? Or just “I’m a conservative attacking conservatives” columns? Maybe you need to write a column about how the NYT fails the free speech test.
“It doesnt guarantee you an audience.”
it also doesn’t guarantee you can say what you want to your employer or your employer’s customers.
Yup exactly. They can do whatever they want on their social media or outside of work.
Not even that, really. An NFL player tweeting that the refs are crooked or incompetent, or making other such derogatory or inflamatory remarks, would be subject to disciplinary action. The whole morals clause thing comes in if racist or other politically unacceptable public comments are made even if they have nothing to do with the NFL directly. Marshawn Lynch got in trouble for NOT talking!
But your main point is correct, of course, and it makes me crazy when the news media just glosses over that fact.
See how long he keeps his "free speech" at the yellow rag.
Proving once again that we cannot coexist with these People.
If 10% of NFL players began protesting in favor of Pro-life during the sporting event, would this author support their right to free speech then? If the answer is no, he needs to re-visit his premise.
Proving once again that we cannot coexist with these People.
Not peacefully anyway.
Sad, but true.

Exactly backwards—No one is taking away NFL overpaid idiots right to speak off the field, just on the field
WHILE multiple cops have been fired, suspended and/or reprimanded for criticising black lives matter and NFL knee takers. when they weren’t even on the job.
NO ONE should EVER believe the lie that the left supports free speech. They don’t.
After several warnings he would most likely be fired ...
Yes, we have rights - but not ‘rights without consequences’. A faster example... an employee yelling the “F” word at his boss... within Constitutional Rights - but NOT within company rules...Same with the NFL..
Hoover spied on everyone back then. YAWNIn the last few years, I have grown tired of televised sport. The NBA forced an owner to sell his team because he didn’t like his girl friend flirting with the players... The NFL turned itself into a bunch of people who are either trying to insult the fans or are trying to not hurt the feelings of those same players. MLB...The Cubs won the World Series. There’s no reason to watch baseball anymore... The Winter Olympics have become worse than any program NBC has ever put on the air, including their pitiful news. PGA Golf. Watching a guy play that has too easy of a time with hot looking women and can take anyone’s money on the course is too much like high school all over again for me. I’m donating all my sports tv time to something deeper with more meaning, like American Pickers.
And French you fail the mental health test you NeverTump scumbag.
For those of you who may not know, Mr. French served in Iraq as a JAG attorney.
His operational role was to make sure that our soldiers weren't being too beastly to the enemy.
An excellent word, coined by the equally excellent essayist, William Hazlitt.
We understand free speech just fine- We’re saying the NFL is free to say whatever they wish- HOWEVER- since they have chosen to speak out loudly against this nation and our president- WE say WE will not support this filthy vile country-hating organization any longer
How’s that for free speech french?
Hey New York Times, everyone still has their free speech..but as it’s always been we are not required to listen.
“WE say WE will not support this filthy vile country-hating organization any longer”.......
NFL employed felons. Why do you think they call it the “National Felons League”?
NO NFL football at this house, be it today, tomorrow and beyond. Hope the “subsidies” are completely eliminated so they can sink or swim on their own without any help from “WE”, the tax payers.
“As a veteran of the war in Iraq, Ive saluted that flag in foreign lands and deployed with it proudly on my uniform. “...
You are not alone even though many of we veterans never set foot in Iraq. We fought, and some died so the NFL “Felons” could play a game and make millions doing so. At 80 years of age, and a proud Navy veteran, I still stand, remove my hat and proudly stand when the National Anthem is played.
