GORDON HEIGHTS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — Just how much can one community take?

There are multiple neighborhoods in New York where the state has clustered paroled ex-cons, and innocent families are paying the price.

A 26-year-old mother accused of trying to kill her baby earlier this month created anguish in her Suffolk County community. Her lawyer claims she was mentally ill and a victim of human trafficking, while others say she was an interloper moving from house to house on a notorious street in a hamlet that borders Coram — Gordon Heights.

We have a medium size apartment building in our community. It's been there for decades.

Never any problems. The building was just a neighborhood background fixture.

Then it was sold.

It quickly filled with section 8 renters and it changed overnight.

Windows and doors broken. Screens pushed out and slapping in the wind so people could sit at the windows and look out. Trash everywhere. A TV tossed out a window. Rolling desk chairs and easy chairs let out in the rain.

They would crowd in front of the building all day. People who stopped at the red light would stare and their jaws would drop.

I dubbed it 'Little Zimbabwe'.

Luckily we had a strong community and pressured the city to take action.

One bad property can potentially destroy a neighborhood within weeks.

Also had a stabbing at a house two blocks away. Lots of houses went up for sale after that one event.

Similar thing happened in my in-laws community. A quiet neighborhood with a well kept section of apartments, amongst nice older homes. Mostly retirees living in the apartments.

Then, Katrina hit NOLA.....and, our wonderful Gov Perry welcomed these poor victims to the Houston area (NOT to Austin!!) and, next thing you know...the apartments are full of Katrina folks and many of the homes become S8 housing. Very sad.

I think their community must’ve eventually had enough, because it is now (finally) coming back. After MANY property values were destroyed. :(

“Suffolk County” - That’s where MS-13 is a BIG problem.
