No the discussion was not started over the slave trade. It was a specific story of a man who was part of the last slave ship to the US.

It was very specific not general. Those wanting to deflect are trying to make it general so they can point else where

We can take a discussion anywhere facts or analysis lead us. That’s how conversation, as opposed to ... ideological badgering, I guess ... works.

Have a nice weekend.

We are NOT talking about any slave trade or even African slave trade. The article is about a man who was part of the last slave ship to the US.

That is what we are talking about. Very much like the left you are trying to generalize a topic Not going to play

You can do as you want. I can point out what I want

It is still deflection no matter how you “justify” it

Happy Mother’s Day

“I am not ignoring reality.”

You seem to want project all responsibility for slavery onto “white people”. You dismiss obvious culpability of others as “deflection”. Unreal.

Black slavers, and muslim slave traders were essential elements of the slave trade - in many ways worse.

And oh by the way, those who finally brought about the widespread elimination of slavery, after millennia, were “white people”.

How will racial guilt trippers ever be able to come to terms with that fundamental historical truth?

“Very much like the left you are trying to generalize a topic”

You are the one who generalized it, with your claim “had white people not been willing to pay for slaves there wouldn’t have been a market”

Also be aware that due to the Napoleonic Code rules of inheritance in Louisiana, many children of slave/slaveowner parents (as “black” as say, Barack Obama, Louis Farrakan, or Jesse Jackson) inherited slaves themselves, upon their parents death. This accumulated to such a percentage by the time of the Civil War, that black slaveowners from Louisiana could field a Brigade on behalf of the Confederacy.

There were thousands of blacks who owned black slaves.

American Indians owned thousands of black slaves.

The first legal slave owner in American history (who established the legal precedent) was a black tobacco farmer in Virginia named Anthony Johnson.

North Carolina’s largest slave holder in 1860 was a black plantation owner named William Ellison.

Only a tiny percentage of American whites ever owned slaves - never more than 3% in any state, ever.

Slavery in one form or another had existed across the world, for all recorded history right up to the point that white Christians began to denounce the practice in England. There were slaves here in North America before white people ever set foot in the place, held by various native tribes.

You seem to believe that it’s deflection to look at the entire picture rather than the cherry-picked white guilt-inducing window of time and place leading up to the US Civil War. You’ve been browbeaten and manipulated, and don’t even appear to realize this.

The United States and white people didn’t invent slavery, and weren’t the first let alone the only people to enslave black people, who were indeed enslaved by their own people as well.

Wake up. What you’ve been taught is politically motivated and contains lies of omission designed to cause you to carry the burden that you’re apparently laboring under.

Free yourself from that form of slavery, mental slavery.

“Very much like the left you are trying to generalize a topic”

You are the one promoting the leftist narrative of collective racial guilt:

“had white people not been willing to pay for slaves there wouldn’t have been a market”

I have a book Matt Bracken gave me years ago that was an autobiography of a deckhand who rose to captain and equity holder of his own slave trading ship which operated way beyond the 1807 British slave trading ban

It had remarkable insight into barracoon life...savagery

From this captains perspective it was paramount to keep the cargo alive

Naturally the book is not well received now and nor is Redikers work

It’s impossible to find empirical data on slave trade, our web is now firmly in the control of our enemies

Something we need to work on btw

I read the book and it’s in one of my scores of stacks but I have it...my oldest read it too...

Can’t recall title but its best I’ve seen on the subject

Progressives simply say it’s all a lie

Yaelle I’m glad you’ve read thiose...I’m going to follow that

But beware

I was at Oak Alley plantation in south Louisiana five years ago and their bookstore had several copies that were reprints of originals and I bought them

I then ordered some online and immediately could tell they were heavily edited to paint as ugly a picture possible....

Matt do you recall title ...my memory is that of an old man with a bum ticker sadly

I can remember thanksgiving 1966 but not what I did three days ago

See Kanye as an example of the tar pit slave trade subject is

As I have pointed out before, the great Negro educator, Booker T. Wshington, strongly urges the point in the address that shot him into prominence as his people's spokesman, of the deep love that many of the former slaves had for the White family they had served.

Booker T. Washington Address.

The denial of historic truth, of course, is typical of the hate-mongers, who are apparently willing to stoop to any fabricated version of reality, so long as it will serve their end of turning one group against another. Lies with a vengeance are the standard tactic of those who seek to disrupt society for devious motives.

For independent confirmation of the implied background of Washington's Address, above, readers should check out the published book length study by the chief actuary for the Prudential Insurance Co., Frederic L. Hoffmann, in the 1890s, which documents how far the Reconstructionists set back the Southern Negro, before Booker T. Washington emerged to begin to effect a positive change.

I think it’s true that there is some ... blackwashing? ... at the plantation tours. I LOVE how intelligent the tour guides are and the wealth of interesting info on the sides of the owners, as well as now the slaves. But yes, they will be extremely careful not to offend the guests of all stripes.

I guess it’s good I read all those “truths about the civil war” books 20 years ago. Who knows how much of that stuff is being edited out of even the books I did read?

That book Matt gave you sounds interesting too. Slavery may be like rape and murder: here to stay as long as humanity exists. It’s still going on today; I read quite the account of a Somali slave girl finally freed in London recently.

Ironically, descendants of slaves might despise anyone white or southern, yet worship michael Jackson. It’s hard to say which is worse, being owned as property or having your young son anally raped by a perv.

If you have some free time and you go to read the narratives of the ex slaves, you can get lost in all that. I sure hope no one goes in and cleans them up.

Oprah should lead the charge to force the people of Benin, to pay for their ancestral sin.

This sort of discussion is a bit like the War on Drugs, where we debate whether this is a supply or demand problem without touching upon morality. Yes, there will always be evil, from all walks of life. And yes, the Ottomans were active in the slave trade, and slavery was pretty popular in Ancient Greece and in Biblical times. Further, tribal warfare helped fuel the supply of slaves, just like there is no shortage of dudes willing to sell drugs to children and adults alike.

Slavery is about morality. Morality depends upon not giving in to sinful activities. Yes, those individuals leading people in to sin are guilty; ultimately, the sinner is accountable for his/her own deeds.

Americans bought other humans and nobody forced them to do so. That is the bottom line. It doesn't matter if the slaves fared better than they would have absent slavery: a sin is always a sin.

Now, a raging and bitter war between the States was fought and the slaves were freed. We sorted out this problem, time to move on. Let's not introduce the Chewbacca Defense. True, there was also a principle of sovereignty and Northern overreach. But to suggest slavery played no role in the CW is like suggesting prostitution has nothing to do with carnality.

If men and women of good character could agree that 1) slavery Is immoral, 2) the slave was the victim, 3) slavery is illegal in the US (except for the 16th Amendment), 4) racism remains in the world, 5) the sin of slavery and reparations today apply to slaveowners and slaves provided you were alive during the CW, 6) despite slavery and the CW, most people of all walks of life in America get along pretty well - not bad, especially compared to other nations and how they deal with racism, and 7) there is a cottage industry of hate-mangers who love to blame that guy who looks like ____ for all their evils, life would be so much easier.

I agree with everything you said.

I was being “larger than morality” and looking at the truth of human behavior. There will always be people who choose evil. Good people must always fight evil. But it’s not going to go away.

It fits with my religion’s belief that man is not born inherently bad or good but with two simultaneous urges speaking, the urge to do what is good and the urge to do what is bad. It is up to us to listen to the good urge, and humans usually do. We are a very helpful lot. But some of us do not.

A serious point that should be considered, because it puts in perspective just how sociopathic is the Left’s attempt to stir up hatred between the races today, is that the very evolution of the terminology of “slave” from “bondsman,” “fief” or what have you, reflects the enslavement of eastern European slavs, by other Whites.

Much of the thousands of years old process of seizing people for involuntary servitude, has involved people of the same race--both as slave & master.
