My high school had cheer leaders (had to try out) and pep squad for anyone. They had their own shirts, meetings and requirements, got floor time for routines and did a whole bunch of other stuff.

People who didn’t make the cut to be on the cheerleading squad generally made up the leadership. One of the beauties was that if you were a one sport team member, did plays or anything else with a seasonal commitment you could be in pep squad and actually letter in it.

I wrote cheers, but the other cheerleaders were so jealous they would not use one of my cheers. I wrote "Die you gravy sucking pigs" and "Try and make a touchdown you scumbags"

My high school started a flag squad for all the chubbies that couldn't make the cheerleader team.
