Food Lion has introduced in-store helper Marty the Robot at a store in La Follette, TN. These helpful robots are currently in four Giant/Martin’s stores in Pennsylvania and the brand plans to deploy them to all 171 Giant/Martin’s stores by the end of 2018.
These friendly robotic associates have been roaming the aisles of several Giant/Martin’s stores since last year, and now Food Lion is also putting the concept to the test. Marty maneuvers around using advanced artificial intelligence and the same laser imaging technology found in self-driving vehicles. He can perform checks that help the store run more smoothly and safely for both customers and associates.

The only thing stopping sales clerks from being helpful is the sales clerks in most cases. Home Depot, at least around here, is the exception. The HD clerks are always Johnny on the Spot.
So, who has the right-of-way when this robot encounters Two-Ton Tessie and her daughter big Bertha doing a big old convoy down the aisle on their electric carts?
Wal-Mart has had mindless automitons for years.
I suspect robots will be able to service robots.

The fact that Marty is not smiling might be a bad sign.
I miss the Food Lion close to where I used to live. It was a well-run store staffed with nice people.
These are definitely NOT Democratic robots because they are helpful and don’t complain about everything. They are going to replace a lot of young, job-seeking Democrat college graduates looking for their first job.

Instead of working in Filene’s Basement stores, they will be living in mommy and daddy’s cluttered basement, for the rest of the unproductive lives.

Aren’t they all, with the exception of Safeway?
Can Marty clean the piss and poo off the grocery carts and scooters and disinfect them before usage by customers? I’d tip him a quarter (does he have a coin slot) for this optional service.
Folks with shot to h*ll immune systems want to know. Of course if you’re young, you can probably survive your encounter with typhoid, jungle fever, crabs, or whatever lingers around between customers. Old folks, not so much.
The grocery stores cannot even get the self checkout to work well.
Seems the headline is misleading, after reading the second sentence it appears it is the Giant/Martin’s chain that is receiving the robots and that Food Lion is only testing the concept in one location.
