If/When land lines are gone I will be telephone free. I will not carry a cell phone and I will not pay the exorbitant cost of one compared to my landline or go through the constant hassle of recharging for the ones that do sort of compare with the cost of the landline. The land line also stays functional in power outages and through hurricanes that take out all the nearby cell towers. That is a considerable advantage here in Florida. When cables are all underground I might go to an internet phone but it will be attached to my desktop and will not go with me to be constantly pestering me through my day.
” I will not carry a cell phone”
What is your problem? My cellphone pays for itself everyday!
With wireless charging there is no plugging in.
“will not go with me to be constantly pestering me through my day.”
You might be surprised that the human has control over the phone ...
Robot calling, not obsolescence, is killing our enthusiasm for landlines. We owe no debt, do not donate cars or possessions to charity, and have no intention or need to refinance. Still, we get no less than twenty robo calls every day from mortgage companies, charity pick up services, and rogue debt collectors. Our telephone alllows us to block fifty numbers, but that capacity has long since been exceeded. We are plagued by annoying calls and it is only getting worse.
And that landline puts out a healthy 40 volts DC. There are many ways to adapt that for 12 volt DC lighting in the house and many other 12 volt applications during power outages.
Plus your fingers love twirling the dial, and you love chatting while wrapping yourself in the curly cord.
I only use a land line, and I have a FAX machine that uses it. I will not use a Cell Phone, and when we do have power outages, the land line is the only way I can call N V Energy. & report the outage.
A ‘walkabout phone’ system in your house is also dead in a power outage. It needs power to run the hub.
I refuse to do ANY online banking or purchasing. NOT in the past & NOT going to start now. I write only about 7 checks a month at the most. All at same time when Soc Sec comes in. I do NOT have a debit card. I do have an ATM card.
How is getting rid of cash going to help YOUR teenager who makes money in the summer mowing lawns or babysitting? You got a 15 y/o son who mows lawns & gets paid with CASH. Learning how to handle that CASH is one of the basic building blocks of a successful life. That kid is TOO YOUNG to have his own checking account, so the homeowner isn’t going to be able to pay him ‘electronically’ anyway.
Someone hasn’t thought this thru.

It isn’t just a ‘CASHLESS SOCIETY’ they are after-—It is knowing exactly where you are at all times. Every electronic purchase you make is traceable.
I love our landline. We have cells, too, but rely on the “home phone” — plugged in to the wall — not wifi, VOIP, or similar. We lose power here in TN more than we did in Alaska on the ‘70s. It’s nice to have stable communications in emergencies. Now, when I go to thrift shops I scan the aisles for “regular” phones.
We had the cell network go down when an earthquake knocked out the poser for the whole island. Landline still worked.
I refuse to walk around with a cell, do not expect to need it. Does sit in my car for emergenciy calls.
Of course, I do not "do" iPhag smartphones or need whatever all those cute little icons are for. Everyone else seems totally zombified by the damn things, so I stay out of the loop.
