I was maybe 10 when I’d ride the P.E. (for those of you not from SoCal, Rodger Rabbit tells what happened to the P.E.) from Long Beach to L.A. to visit my aunt and uncle. It made stops in Compton (still safe then), Watts (still black then) and Willowbrook (which was black then, don’t know what it’s like now). The terminal in L.A. was downtown, pretty much Skid Row. Rode by myself, perfectly safe. Was white back then, oddly still white now.

Watts was black, but had decent well-kept homes. Was such a contrast to what we saw on T.V. from back east. Watts wasn’t a slum.
