VENTURA, Calif. (KABC) -- A man was stabbed in the neck while holding his young daughter on his lap while dining at a restaurant on the Ventura Promenade.

Ventura police received multiple calls around 9:20 p.m. Wednesday about a stabbing at the Aloha Steakhouse at 364 S. California St.

Police said the victim and his wife were having dinner along with their 5-year-old daughter at the time of the attack, which appeared to be unprovoked.

Investigators said there was no altercation or contact prior to the attack, and the victim and suspect did not appear to know each other.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a group of good Samaritans standing along the Ventura Promenade who had chased the suspect from the crime scene onto the beach, investigators said.

Officers tracked down the suspect and ordered him to the ground. He complied and was detained on suspicion of attempted homicide.

Police identified the suspect as 49-year-old Jamal Jackson, describing him as a local vagrant.

While Jackson was being taken into custody, other responding officers found the victim at the crime scene, suffering from a life-threatening stab wound to the neck. The officers rendered first aid to the man until medical responders arrived on scene.

The victim was transported to a local hospital to be taken immediately into surgery. Following surgery, the victim was listed to be in critical condition.

The manager of the Ventura restaurant said the victim's family called to thank them and the good Samaritans who took action during the stabbing.

A motive in the stabbing was not immediately known, police said.

My niece and her husband used to fish off that pier. About 3 years ago they called me and I went down there to meet them. There were homeless people camped out, asleep on the beach all around it. I haven’t been back.
Down the street from where this happened is a place called Surfers Point. I used to get up and drive through McDonalds and go sit on the rocks and watch the surfers while eating my breakfast. The promenade runs right alongside the beach there. I haven’t done that in years because of the homeless everywhere.
If Ventura doesn’t get the homeless, vagrants, whatever you want to call them away from the beaches and tourist area they’re going to lose a ton of money.

Why is a 5-yr-old at a restaurant for dinner at 9:20 pm?

Wow that's what yo got out of this? How special you must be to want to impose your parenting views. You appear to be a member of the It Takes a Village Idiot Club.

Maybe you could try and focus on the fact that some sick son of a bitch almost killed this man while his five year old, who will carry the trauma the rest of her life, but no let's address the really horrible aspect of the story, that a couple took their five year old to dinner at a restaurant at HORRORS 9:20 pm!

You are very kind. I have so many regrets over various parenting moments, hopefully God will redeem my flawed efforts and my kids will remember a mom who deeply loved them rather than a weary, fussy, cranky mom.

I feel so badly for the mom and daughter left behind. What was a sweet family time turned into a nightmare. So very sad.

Because her parents went out to dinner.

So, basically, those of us who disagree with you are leftists? Wow.
There were nights I got home from work late in the evening. We might take my son to eat after I got home, so we would have that special time. Did he stay up late every night? No, but there were times he did. That was my decision, not the village. There are families on different schedules. Some who stay up late and get up late; some who retire early and rise early. Why should it matter to anyone else?
I try not to be judgemental and fail often. But, when it is pointed out, I acknowledge it. I understand you believe your opinion to be the truth, but it really is an opinion.
I do hope you rethink your harsh criticism of the victim and the posters.

You're taking this too personally.

Unlike at over sites, I'm allowed to be more conservative than you are.

You do not know me and you certainly do not know if you are more conservative than I am.
How about we concern ourselves more about the fact that a mentally ill man killed a man. You make it sound as if he deserved this fate because his child was not in bed at a time you believe she should have been. I cannot understand that and don’t wish to.

I spoke of what I was wondering about. Isn't that allowed?

You were theorizing based on no information other than the fact that this family was in a restaurant at 9:20 PM and that the child was 5. Jumping to the idea that the victim was doing something wrong simply because his young daughter was out at a time you consider too late, well, it was a big jump.

It is certainly allowed, of course.

I raised my child as I saw fit and will not tell others how to raise theirs, unless, of course, there is obvious abuse. Eating supper with your parents at 9:20PM would not constitute abuse, in my opinion. But, yours is obviously different.
So, should the government be setting up guidelines to cover bed time? It could be a real revenue builder. /s

It is wrong to keep a 5-yr-old up that late. Ask any doctor.

You can disagree, that's okay. But it should be okay for me, too.

Its a high end steak house in the tourist section of the beachside community. More and more “Homeless” have move in, begging, robbing and acting out their fantasies driving out decent citizens and tourists. Homeless can be divided into four groups: Drug Addicts who have burned out friends and family, Mentally ill, who roam the streets pooping on the streets, and talking to themselves, Criminals fleeing the Law (most act very nice not wishing to call attention to themselves) and scam artists who say they can panhandle $350 a day. This problem must be solved. Its a cultural problem, not a housing problem.

We can disagree.
I personally know of a family (they homeschool). The father works 2nd shift. They have adjusted their schedule so that they have dinner after he gets home. They go to bed a few hours later, sleep til mid morning or noon. Breakfast is eaten, Dad goes to work, they have school/play. Their entire day is tilted differently than the “norm” and it works for them. They are a really cool family. 4 kids. 3, 5, 7 and 10.
I am not suggesting the victim and family do the same. I was just showing an example of how “different” is not always questionable.
PS I guess I was a really bad parent(my son was up after 9 plenty when he was young) so go ahead and judge me. It is all good. I know I was not always perfect and never claimed to be. I truly wish I had been.

Have a wonderful evening.

I know, many families are not doing what is best for children.

Wow, so you know better than all other parents. Good to know.
This family chooses to spend time together and adjusts their lifestyle to accommodate that desire. It is more important than where the sun is in the sky.

But, perhaps you are not referencing this family that you do not know. Much the same as the family in Ventura.

Good night.

Why are you allowed to condemn me for what I think is best for children?

Your position is that I'm not allowed to speak. I don't understand.

I have not condemned you for anything. I think it is wrong of you to judge others for making other choices for their families. That is all.
Where have I said you are not allowed to speak?

I am sorry but that was not my intent nor did I post anything remotely like that.
