Colitas means "little tail" in Spanish or slang for "little ass".

I'll be damned. Me and my friends always thought it meant farts. This is good to know.

Listen again with new ears and see if you don't get creeped out like I did.

Living it up at the Hotel California.

2. (colloquial) (male genitalia) (Mexico) (Spain)
a. weenie (slang) (United States)
Mami, me pica un poco la colita. <- My weenie's a little itchy, mom.

That'll teach me to accept Henly's explanation "it was a made up word, means nothing."

I think I know what it is really about now. Tell me your thoughts.

On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night.
There she stood in the doorway;
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself
‘This could be heaven or this could be Hell’
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor,
I thought I heard them say
Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face.
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year (any time of year) you can find it here
Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes bends
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys, that she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget
So I called up the Captain,
‘Please bring me my wine’
He said, ‘we haven’t had that spirit here since nineteen sixty-nine’
And still those voices are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say”
Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face.
They livin’ it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise (what a nice surprise), bring your alibis
Mirrors on the ceiling,
The pink champagne on ice
And she said, ‘we are all just prisoners here, of our own device’
And in the master’s chambers,
They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives,
But they just can’t kill the beast
Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back to the place I was before
‘Relax’ said the night man,
‘We are programmed to receive.
You can check out any time you like,
But you can never leave!’

Especially when you consider the song itself is about addiction. “You can check out any time you like but you can never leave.” Henley stated such in an interview. As Q says...”These people are sick!”

I listened to the song and then did a Google Search on Hotel California. Found this interesting article.

•During the “Hippie Era” of the 1960s and 1970s, people were know to easily grow their own marijuana in the extremely fertile land of the Todos Santos area and then roll them into “Colitas” which is a Mexican slang term for “Joint” or Marijuana cigarette.............................

"The song “Hotel California” by the Eagles was not in any way inspired by the Hotel California in Todos Santos. The hotel wishes to inform its guests that there is no past or present connection between the hotel and the Eagles, any of its members, or their song. Any rumors or innuendo suggesting that the song is associated with or inspired by the hotel are untrue."

History The Hotel California was founded in, 1948, by a Chinese immigrant named Mr. Wong,

I have always loved that song, Hotel California.

The music is outstanding. Never paid a lot of attention to the words.

I see it in a whole new way now. Perhaps not a good way either...

See, back when I was young, when the Hotel California album came out, I just assumed that a Colita was some sort of Mexican drink or something.

All the lyrics are different now. I’m kind of woke!

Still love the guitar licks though.
