Consider a FakeTV, too.
> I love dogs too but worry that if I die...what will happen to them.
They’ll have a nice feast on your corpse until someone notices the smell?
I don’t think a dog in this country is left homeless these days. There seems to be ASPCAs that are, for Pete’s sake bringing in dogs from Mexico and South America because they cannot get enough US dogs to support their bureaucracy and God knows, we cannot shut anything down once its job is over.
The police have no obligation to protect you.
Oh, I remember... Spend the money to re-enforce all your exterior doors and windows. It’ll make it that much harder for anyone to gain entrance.
The neighbors tell me the last owner of our house was burglarized once while he was away on business. The crooks actually drove up on his lawn and rammed his front door with a pickup truck. When the owner returned, he replaced the front door with a heavy wooden door which he covered with a monster iron gate. I’ll regret leaving that behind when we move!
Could you make arrangements with a family member to take your dog in the event you predecease him?
We have a 40 lb Shepard mix rescue. She is alert and barks like a big one. You dont need a huge dig to make a big fuss.
Good outcome!
I adopted a retired racing greyhound. He is loving and likes everyone. Not a watchdog by any means. But he goes nuts when anyone knocks at the door, rings the doorbell or makes any unusual noises outside. He charges the door and jumps against it, or runs to the nearest window, barking like crazy. Not because he’s a good guard dog, but because there may be someone there to pet him. This comes in handy in case of salesmen.
Once someone knocked at the door and he ran and jumped against the door barking like crazy. I went to the door to see a man running away down the driveway with his hands in the air, yelling “NO NO NO!”
Motion sensor spots to bath front and back in bright light + cameras on steel masts, up at twenty feet from the ground with wiring running inside the poles to house monitors and recorders.
We rescued two GSD mixes from the local shelter. They have enough of the GSD attitude for protection but are both the sweetest dogs on Earth. If someone even walks down our street their bark is not something that can be ignored.
I have no doubt if someone tried to do any of us harm our dogs would tear the criminal apart but to anybody who comes into our home invited they insist on tummy rubs.
The Vivint system seems to work ok for us. Especially when augmented with a Remington 870 12 gauge and a vicious, 12 pound King Charles spaniel. I’d recommend getting it from Best Buy though, so there’s no contract to sign.
Dogs are always great. Ring or Blink camera systems allow real time monitoring of your house while you’re away, and are relatively cheap. Motion-activated exterior lighting is also huge. You’re right about a security system; the delayed response just isn’t worth the money.
I am a Dobe person myself. Sadly, both of mine are now gone ahead. I know that even IF a intruder could have defeated them, at minimum I would have had a generous heads up, and the intruder would have had a merry dance before they could have gotten near me.
Now I have motion sensors set to “SCREAM” loud alarms, door bar, extra locks, and that which we do not mention.
I dare not parent another Dobe - I have health things going on, so it wouldn’t be fair to the dog(s). BREAKS MY HEART, but I want to be responsible. I also want another Dobe so much I can’t stand it. *sigh*
Dont let the simulated napping fool you, if the BIG ONE (110# Cane Corso Italian Mastiff Rescuse) hears a mouse fart its Full volume guard bark that will rattle the windows, the Little One (71# Boxer) may be Deaf but She has Thermal Vision and BOTH are relentless.
