It's NOT vain or superficial to mourn the loss of your power to turn heads: Midlife [tr]
UK Daily Mail ^ | March 26, 2018 | Annabel Cole

My mother and I were in WHSmith in Guildford on a Saturday afternoon when I first became aware of the power of good looks. We'd spent a very happy afternoon shopping when she remarked: 'You do know men are beginning to notice you, don't you?'

Then 15, I was a fairly unsophisticated schoolgirl for whom the purchase of a new pencil case held far more allure than the prospect of male attention. But I had noticed it, too. And, yes, there was a frisson of excitement at the prospect of this new phase of my life.

For my mother, a very good-looking woman whose background was in fashion, it must have been a significant moment, too. She made the comment kindly, without a hint of jealousy or disapproval. But now, as a mother of two teenage daughters, I find myself in her shoes and know that a keen sense of loss is ignited as you pass on the beauty baton.

Ah Persevero is in her fifties now, alas, Persevero. But I still so enjoy men’s attention and what I have learned to my delight is I get my share from MY guys - those in their 40s, 50s, 60s. That is cool with me. I am not some weirdo who wants people my sons age flirting with me.

The flirting of my guys is more subtle and I confess I loveit. An admiring glance, a kind word, a sincere compliment. Much better than the dudes yelling at me from cars. Although married and not adulterous I appreciate the kind attention.

It was shocking to me, how fast I went from Sex Kitten to Mangy Cat. LOL

What is important is that she does not wish to feel bad about being vain and superficial, and thus she is declaring single-handedly (and, oh, so bravely! *applause!*) that it is no longer something to be labeled as "bad", thus freeing women everywhere from the shackles of bad-feels. (*applause!*) She's a pioneer and a hero. (*doubleplus good applause!*)

OMG! There is literally NOTHING I find so repugnatnt as this kind of philosophical masturbation.

What's even worse is how often attractive women get away with it, so much so that even ugly women feel empowered to give it a try.

It is sad, the way that women obsess over every imperfection and hold themselves to impossible standards, guaranteeing disappointment in themselves for the majority of their lifetimes.

Actually, it's rather telling about their obsession with themselves down to the most minute detail.

I submit the perverse vanity displayed in the first panel of your graphic is the same as that projected onto men in the second.

When she told her daughter she looked great, but to use her power wisely, I thought that to be good advice.

Unfortunately, that was only more vanity.

Telling someone to act wisely is much easier than first learning what constitutes wisdom, then passing it on.

Men call us vain, but they don't treat plain women with the same courtesy and smiling attention that they treat pretty women.

Don't you mean "deference" which IS vain.

Why should you be treated any better than any other woman?

In my work life I experienced the rarity of being around a woman who was beautiful and she didn’t know it. She amazed all the guys. Never saw the combination of those traits again.

I shouldn't. Plain women should be treated with the same courtesy pretty women are treated to. But only a true gentleman behaves that way, and most men today are just guys.

"True gentlemen" were killed off by women. Is it any wonder most men today are "just guys?"

Absolutely! The freedom is amazing, and for the first time since being that non-sexually child, I finally feel like a stable and happy person. No more pms, thank God.

I’m in my mid 60’s and despite being wrinkled, I can STILL turn a head that isn’t 70 or more. I still have my original child color hair, I don’t dye it. And when I put my choppers in, I have a most beautiful smile! My legs are still slender and shapely, butt firm and not flabby. Though I do have older age showing here and there, there is something to be said for a great and ready smile, sense of humor, the look in the eye and a bubbly personality, not to mention...good character, kindness and respectfulness that isn’t fake. My partner is 12 years younger than I, and he wouldn’t trade me for all the pretty ladies out there for all the tea in China. I know, I’ve done my utmost to free him up.

Beauty is an elusive thing that simply isn’t attached to the surface of a person’s skin.

At least not the kind of beauty that deserves any measure of respect.

If you've cultivated that particular asset correctly, you won't even notice when it's gone.

Well, if gentlemen were so easy to kill off that even a woman could do it, I guess they were just... paper tigers to begin with.

Well aren't you just so clever!

Normally, one would think an opponent who chose such an obviously controversial screen name were looking to qualify reasoned debaters from petulant children (who, being intellectually lazy, will always go for the "low hanging fruit"), but not you! You actually found a way to weave the name into an oh-so-clever SENTENCE!

Bravo!

I’m glad you enjoyed it. I like to delight the easily-entertained, and I’m relieved you don’t mind the fact that I use only the amount of effort I think my conversational partner deserves.

Hmmmm.... That sentence is a little incongruous; I suppose that's what it looks like when you comment from both of your faces.

When I was a child, and marriage was considered permanent in a Christian society, both men and women grew old and changed the way they looked as a rite of passage. Married women put their hair up and wore modest dresses, even if they married at 18 or 20. Men wore suits or jackets and both sexes wore hats.

Even in the summer, people dressed well to go on the boardwalk, women in dresses and men with lightweight suits and straw hats. Year ‘round both sexes dressed well to go out in public or on public transportation.

Before the widespread use of jersey fabrics in the 70s such as T-shirts and sweat pants, clothes were confining, and most people were slender until their 50s. The old women had a standard church outfit of a navy dress with tiny white polka dots and the men wore white shirts with armbands and suspenders. Both older sexes wore spectator shoes or sturdy oxfords.

Now, the pressure to look young and sexually attractive to all comers has become pathological. Before, decent men put a premium on their wives looking modest. Today’s culture wants the sexes to use each others’ looks as bragging rights—the sexier, the better—contributing to the instability of relationships.
