After a few committed months of hot yoga at a studio in New York, Christina Rice had found her niche. So when the studio announced that it was offering teacher training, she signed right up. It was only when she arrived with her mat that she noticed something striking. There were 54 other women and men in the 10-week course, and not one of them looked like her. She was the lone African American in the class.

My community has about a thousand households. I went to a large gathering once and saw a lone black woman there. Never saw her again. She really stuck out.

They actually looked exactly like her except for melanin level. And height, weight, age, body shape, age, hair color, and a bazillion other things. Why do they always focus on just that one?

I went to a yoga class with my mother when I was about 6 years old. The class was made up of all white women. Yoga always seemed like something that appealed to a certain group of people. It wasn’t for everyone. I think it still like that today.
If she was welcomed there, what’s the problem? We’re supposed to be beyond race. I’m a pretty bad basketball player, but used to box and am have that kind of build. A friend and I were at a racially mixed YMCA and were the only ‘white guys’ in a pick up basketball game. After playing for maybe an hour one of the ‘African American’ guys we were playing against said “you guys are more like ‘beach guys’ than basketball players”. We all had a good laugh, and had a good time playing full court. People need to suck it up and quit being so ridiculously oversensitive.
