Olive, a three-month-old kitten that was placed in a freezer, squeezed and then thrown off a second story balcony by a man in Fontana last month, is getting what every kitten needs: a family.
Beth Stern, a television personality and the wife of TV and radio personality Howard Stern, flew from New York to California to rescue the injured kitten on March 10.
Stern found out about Olive's story in People Magazine's online article and contacted the City of Fontana's Animal Services Department to inquire about fostering Olive.
During her recent visit to California, Stern met Mayor Acquanetta Warren, Animal Services Officer Jenny Fisher, Police Officer Jennie Venzor and Police Sergeant Kevin Goltara to thank them for their efforts on Olive's behalf.
Warren expressed her thanks to Beth and Howard Stern, as well as North Shore League America, for their dedication to rescuing and fostering animals in need.
"When I read about Olive, I felt physically ill and knew I had to do something to help," said Stern. "I am so very grateful to everyone from the City of Fontana who saved Olive's life and was thrilled to meet them when they brought her to me to bring home and foster."
Beth Stern is a volunteer, foster parent and national spokesperson for North Shore Animal League America, the world's largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization. As an animal rights activist, she dedicates her life to fostering kittens and cats, particularly those with special needs, and helping them find their forever homes.
Olive suffered major injuries to her chest and a fractured leg during an incident on Feb. 2.
The suspect in the case, 34-year-old Lucio Lopez, was apparently upset that the kitten entered his apartment and so he allegedly placed the kitten in a freezer, police said. Witnesses reported that he later took the kitten out of the freezer and allegedly began squeezing her body before throwing her off a second story balcony.
After the alleged animal abuse, Lopez fled the scene before officers arrived. He was later found while driving in Fontana and was arrested.

What insane demonic power is it that causes people to hurt animals for amusement?
I would love to know so i can hunt it down and destroy it.
Eight lives left for this beautiful creature.
Best wishes to the darling kitten and Mrs. Stern.
I can’t read the abuse stories at all anymore-——the header is enough for me.
In a little over 2 weeks, the next FReepathon will begin.
We need to finish this one first.
Come on FReepers, lets do this!!!
Acquanetta???
I like that: “ illegal criminal invader” almost as good as “illegal Democrat voter”
I can’t either. Happy ending is really sweet. This kitty will have the best life now.
Looks like she has some calico markings. I have had several calico and tortoiseshell cats, and they all have had wonderful personalities.
I wish to ride shotgun.
ALL of my cats over many years, save one, were tortie and whites. They have tortitude, but I find it charming. Wouldn't be without it. This little gal was described as still purring when rescued. I am sure she is a right little sweetie.
Me neither. I know the Sterns do good work with the kitties, though.
Pretty scary stuff. And Democrats wanted to make one President, even cried when she lost. THAT is even more scary. I tell liberals that and they refuse to believe Hillary is like that. I tell them "I've seen Bill Clinton cry, George Bush cry and Obama cry. When have you ever seen Hillary cry? Hillary doesn't cry. She laughs. She took out the leader of the completely neutral country of Libya destroying millions of lives and she laughed about it" Al Gore is another one like that. Completely devoid of emotion. He's an actor. He doesn't understand emotion so he acts like he does which is why he seems completely and utterly full of sh*t and over the top all the time, totally pretentious.
I have two cats. One is a cat genius. She plays fetch. It is so funny. Throw a paper wad anywhere in the house and she tears after it like it is prey and then brings it back and lays it at your feet. Having this kind of intellect in a cat is a problem. She has figured out how to open doors. She jumps up and pulls the door handle (Lever) and then noses herself into the room. All our doors are lever style. Strategic use of bungee cords have kept her from harm, but I am afraid I will have to convert the house to knobs.
We have a cat who turns on water faucets for fun. He flooded the back of the house one time. Now we have to cover them!
What a cutie! Looks like my little “Beans”.
There is a special place in hell for those who abuse animals.
They do.
She does that too. Only lever ones. God help us if cats develop opposable thumbs.
