'I need my baby's body,' mother says of 14-year-old missing in the Mississippi River(Trayvon II?)

A search for a 14-year-old who authorities said jumped into the Mississippi River was called off over the weekend, leaving his family and others who knew him desperate to recover his body and questioning how a chase of a stolen vehicle ended in a boy's death.

Ja'sean Williams was identified by family members as the teen who they presume has died after he went into the river early Thursday (March 8). The St. Bernard Sheriff's Office said Ja'sean jumped into the river near the Chalmette Ferry Landing, after police chased him and another boy in a stolen car.

"Something went wrong on that bridge and ... we want answers," said his mother, Sonya Williams.

According to a news release, Ja'sean was driving a stolen Infiniti FX35 near the intersection of Paris Road and Casa Calvo Street shortly before 2 a.m. Thursday when Sheriff's Office deputies tried to stop the car for a "suspected moving violation."

Ja'sean refused to stop, the report states, and "fled at a high rate of speed," southbound on Paris Road towards the ferry landing. The car crashed into a guard rail of the ferry landing and, with the car stuck, Ja'sean got out and tried to run away before jumping in the river, according to the report.

The 15-year-old passenger who had been in the car was caught by deputies and booked with resisting arrest, possession of stolen property and obstruction of justice, according to the sheriff's office.

Ja'sean's mother, Sonya Williams said the 15-year-old boy picked up her son in the stolen car late Wednesday and the two went to their friend's house in Little Woods. The boy told her they left around 1 a.m. and he was tired, so he asked Ja'sean to drive. According to Sonya Williams, the boy said Ja'sean missed the exit

Well, baby, start by giving a kid like "Ja'Sean'" a decent American name, like JASON. He's been here for a few generations, right? Our families' old Hebrew names wouldn't mean much to Americans, and that's why we don't use them around here. We are AMERICANS. You want to combat "feelings of isolation?" Let your progeny ASSIMILATE. How about focusing on INTEGRATION and AMERICAN PRIDE instead of ISOLATION and HATRED? (Or maybe I'm just an old loon.)

PS I’ve lived and “worked” in W and E Africa and I never met a “Ja’Sean.”

Cute pictures of when he was young. Dare we ask for anything recent?

Maybe someone will write a song about him...along the lines of Ode To Billie Joe.

"Billie Joe McAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge".

Why aren’t the parent(s) [too much to ask for the plural, in most cases] NOT charged w/ neglect?

‘Discipline’\rap-sheet (a mile long) and didn’t know the windows/front door could be locked?

Why do we no longer hold the parent(s)\guardian(s) responsible? Would that not nip a lot of this crap in the bud (when mom/dad have to start writing out CHECKS [fines\fees\court costs...])

Indeed. What went wrong is that she is the kind of mother who would name her child Ja’Sean. (BTW I never know if I’m supposed to do a little hic like when I say Hawai’i, or do I click my tongue there, or what.)

Jeff,
Couple years ago I took the family to Calif.
Went up to Sequoia National Park and decided to not come home to Florida until we went to see Mount Whitney. To do so we had to drive along the Kern River.
It had been a dry season and the river was low but still very rugged.
Last year after enormous snowfall the river was mighty and many who’d been use to it being docile died while running it.
Beautiful but trecherous.

"...Pretty sure he wont be stealing any more cars. Sad a family has to go through something like that..."

You mean a family having to suffer going through having their car stolen by a feral animal?

Yes I know; no family should have to go through that.

But there's good news: The world now has one less career criminal and car thief.

Oh wait: You are referring to the family of the feral criminal. Never mind, then.

"...Years ago a FReeper described his barely surviving cold water experience in a canoe or some kind of small craft. Someone else was there to rescue him or he would not have told the story...."

I know exactly what you are referring to. It had an impact on me, too. The FReeper did well in describing the event.

IIRC it was a canoe on a small lake in New England and folks in a nearby restaurant saw him.

"...Our families' old Hebrew names wouldn't mean much to Americans..."

I'm a fan of the name Ruth. I did not consider it Jew-y in the least and it had to be explained to me when naming my daughter (I was outvoted). It was my aunt's middle name, for gosh sake!

Turns out I have an affinity for Old Testament names. I find them timeless and that gives me a small amount of comfort in this crazy world.
