There is a notion that Mars was a Moon of a planet called Tiamet/Tiamat. When that planet which was a watery planet was ‘destroyed’ the water impacted one side of the Moon we call Mars. The instability resulting from the sudden absence of Tiamat caused the atmosphere of Mars the Moon to be stripped away.
