Black Panther premieres to the general public this week. And as we all already know, it will be the blackity, black, black, black, black, black, blackest thing that will ever happen in the history of black people, blackness and people. So black that instead of ticket stubs, the box office will give you a reparations check. So black that instead of popcorn, the concession stands will sell buckets of white tears—frozen, caramelized and sprinkled with Old Bay. So black that apparently the first 15 minutes of the movie is just an Ida B. Wells hologram playing spades with Danny Glover. So black that at each theater will be actual Black Panthers with actual black panthers on chains ready to sic on white people.
Naturally, all of this tremendous and transformative and transcendent blackness has made some of us self-conscious. Sure, you listened to Lemonade and you drink lemonade every day, which makes you sufficiently black. But are you black enough to even watch Black Panther without getting vertigo? Without being overcome with PTBD—post-traumatic blackness disorder?

Reminds me of going to see “Superfly” in a (black) Central District theater when it first came out. The fellas were shocked to see white faces!

The studio is working too hard to promote it for a lot of different reasons that have nothing to do with it being a good movie.

If the stroke was bad enough, you probably don’t have your wallet. It might be tough to talk your way in. Especially if the last thing you remember is a panther movie with Peter Sellers. Of course you might get the snot beaten out of you if you wonder out loud if black is the new pink.

Hell with that quiz noise!!! I learned 40 years ago that trying to watch a movie with a majority black audience is an exercise in craziness. Entertaining on a certain level (you haven’t lived until you’ve see the original Jamie Lee Curtis “Halloween” with the theater full of mostly black enlisted troops) but you can’t get caught actually being more amused by the audience than the movie...
I was interested before they made it into some political and racial statement.
Now, meh.
I’ll catch it on Netflix someday.
My point is not that the people are somehow inferior, but that for the most part, their cultures do not produce much in the way of prosperity, security, or technological advancement for their people.

Actually I once read the comments of a guy who believed that the Africans that were captured were neither the brightest nor the quickest. The more intelligent and the more athletic were able to evade the slave trader’s traps.
The writer felt that scenario helped explain several things about today’s descendants of the slaves. Maybe so ...

I watched the official trailer on youtube, a blackplotation film nothing more (imagine ‘Shaft’ ‘Black Dynamite’ and ‘Superfly’ updated) nothing else.
The soundtrack is laughable ` and includes the track ‘the revolution will not be televised’ By Gil Scott Heron.
