An official portrait of former first lady Michelle Obama was unveiled at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery Monday morning. The painting was done by Baltimore artist Amy Sherald, who is known for her social justice painting style.

It doesnt look like her at all.
Its a rather generic fashion drawing.
Not a bad drawing, as these go, just not really a portrait.
Affirmative action artists instead of who would be best for the job. What a shock.

Or her tablecloth. That ridiculous painting doesn’t even look like her, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

Is there a subliminal message hidden in the fabric design of the dress?
Was she wearing Hefty garbage bags to the event? Geez, she couldn’t even put on some appropriate clothing?

That’s a weak painting. I don’t see a confident artist putting her stamp on the figure. The drawing or construction is sufficient, but the artist’s strange choice to use light grey tints, and chalky, cool grey tones for the figure is puzzling. Why limit the palate to black and white? If she had to work with limited palate, why not choose earth tones, such as Sepia or Ocher?
The piece looks like a first or second draft, certainly not one that is complete for presentation. It would have been more acceptable as a figure in an outside mural, if surrounded by other forms, but seems sterile and not strong as is. Michelle Obama is known for the strength of her personality. She is NOT a subtle or subdued person in public.
I don’t care for Mrs. Obama, but I can still separate the person from a (quasi) piece of art.
