The Revolutionary Power Of Black Panther: Marvel’s new movie marks a major milestone
Time ^ | February 8, 2018 | Jamil Smith

The first movie I remember seeing in a theater had a black hero. Lando Calrissian, played by Billy Dee Williams, didn’t have any superpowers, but he ran his own city. That movie, the 1980 Star Wars sequel The Empire Strikes Back, introduced Calrissian as a complicated human being who still did the right thing. That’s one reason I grew up knowing I could be the same. If you are reading this and you are white, seeing people who look like you in mass media probably isn’t something you think about often. Every day, the culture reflects not only you but nearly infinite versions of you—executives, poets, garbage collectors, soldiers, nurses and so on. The world shows you that your possibilities are boundless. Now, after a brief respite, you again have a President.

I would not be surprised if this movie gets a few Oscar nominations.

I'm not "white", and the people in mass media don't look like me at all, and until people made an issue of it, I NEVER thought about it. Didn't bother me at all. People were people to me. They still are. The only time it bothered me was when a couple of "white" kids beat me up for being different. But I got over that when the overwhelming majority of "white" people treated me just fine.

Jamil Smith is correct, it isn’t something I think about very often. I am too busy thinking about right or wrong, hard working or lazy, family or job. I do not really have time to think about the color of somebodies skin.

But they sure seem to take a lot of time and angst thinking about their skin color.

That’s one reason I grew up knowing I could be the same.

Really? He needed a movie character to tell him that he could be a complicated human being capable of doing right? And said character had to have his skin color (or similar) for that message to come through?

What a thoroughly stupid, racist, race-obsessed way of "thinking"!

BTY, note the race-obsession inherent in his way of speaking. People ARE white, ARE, black, etc. Skin color IS identity above all other characteristics.

Absolutely zero interest in supporting the race mongering movement.

Yes, they are taking a character that had little to do with SJW nonsense and have turned him into SJW nonsense with this movie (and the current run of the comic book).

The problem I see with this author’s worldview is that he thinks blacks somehow need to be legitimized through the use of wide-appeal media.

Before reading this article, I never gave character casting a second thought, but if you consider Hollywood as the arbiter of social stigmas, look no further than how blacks are portrayed in film.

Further, if we distill that down to the author’s understanding of social acceptance, then film can be attributed to the ills of the black community and should be eschewed by American pop culture for propagating negative stereotypes.

Pretty much my experience, but in reverse.
I grew up around military bases where there were a pretty good mix of different peoples. Never thought much about it. I’m not “black”, but I’ve been beat up many times and harassed for being “white” at a “black school”. (Lived in Jax, FL and got bussed to Northside schools from the Southside.) Got over it because I had “black” friends and the overwhelming majority treated me just fine.

Guess he never heard of Sydney Poiter. You can appreciate his acting even while not liking some of his political stances.

seeing people who look like you in mass media

I did not see mass media ... Hollywood ... growing up. I saw the words in the Bible, no pictures. I saw the words in both Christian and secular books (rare pictures).

My grandson age 10 does not watch TV and has seen no more than 3 Hollywood movies. But he sure has seen a lot of Minecraft. I guess that means he'll grow up to be a blockhead?

It’s amazing how that works, isn’t it?

Today we’re seeing what happens when Dr. Martin Luther King is celebrated but not his intentions or ideals.

Not only has this guy never heard of Sydney Poitier, but what about these Black Actors that were pretty good:

Yaphet Kotto
Woody Strode
Richard Roundtree
Jim Brown
Fred Williamson
Eddie Anderson
Many others, these were the ground breaking actors that made the path easier for the ones to follow.
