My grandmother, may she rest in peace, was arrested three times by the Czarist Russian secret police for trying to sneak out of the country. She succeeded on her fourth try and came to America. She was 19 years old at the time.
When I was a child, I remember one of my great-uncles (her brother-in-law) saying something about 'the old country." My grandmother screamed, "don't talk about ''the old country.' The old country was terrible, that's why we came here!"
So yeah, my family came from a sh!thole country, and I'm proud of my grandmother's courage in getting here.
