While reading Winston Churchill's biography of the Duke of Marlborough, I was surprised that Marlborough and other high nobles held various positions like "gentleman of the bedchamber". It seemed odd to me that such important people would be in charge of making sure the King put on his pajamas correctly and was tucked into bed. But this was based on the idea that only titled nobility could be trusted to keep the King's secrets and not gossip about what they saw.

I'm glad the Queen sacked that old gossip.
