You are clearly a patriot who does not shirk his duty.
Many moons ago, Vox had some thoughtful articles - these days they are so solid left wing that they must walk crooked....
So I started looking things up awhile back but didn't remember Hart and Celler names, did remember the latter was a Jew, not that it should matter but sometimes it does.
I hadn't had any exposure to foreigners at the time, had a prejudice against Asians (not many in my midwest home state, MA or CA yet). After meeting the wives of some military friends, I came to see how wrong I was and generally like Asians very much. I grew up with blacks, wasn't an issue but was because we didn't socialize, etc. First exposure to Muslims was in Minneapolis. Gradually a few other ethnicities but not the shithole ones except the Algerians who robbed me and my friends in Paris. Last came quite a few Hispanics, some wonderful ones I felt totally at home with despite the differences in our culture, and others I don't like much because their values are so different and watched the illegals marry to get citizenship, etc., etc., cheat and lie without thinking anything about it. So I guess all people have good and bad apples. Some you can't afford to find out which they are.
Now I don't know what Trump said at the meeting, have some compassion for some of the downtrodden ones, but if he used that word, he was only echoing what many think and fear, even on the other side. It actually makes me chuckle. My compassion has limits, I'm a realist, and the images of arrogant, demanding refugees trying to break into Hungary and other places are burned, BURNED in my mind.
Didn't mean to give you such an "earful".
Years ago I got furious when I realized the people who went to satellite technology and the rest of it didn't give a $hit about a backup system.
My mother turned me into a news and political "junkie", from a very early age. And on top of that, schools used to dedicate a time slot, from even the earliest grades, to "CURRENT EVENTS". So I got what you might call a "double dose" of encouragement to keep up with what was happening in the news and it wasn't just about what was going on in this nation...no, we studied WORLD events, in school, too.
Growing up in NYC was probably different from kids who grew up in other parts of this nation...we were exposed to people of different races, ethnicities, and yes, even religions; though not Muslims back then.
Perhaps that's why I was on top of what was going on, re the hideous Kennedy Bill, when it happened and I do have a good memory, so remember it all still.
My compassion meter ran out long ago, for most people! I have NO compassion for our present invaders ( nor those who have been and still are invading Europe ), criminals, or even those whom the damned lefties swoon over.
Thank you for sharing that about your background. With me, my mentor was my father about politics and world affairs but it wasn't on a boad enough basis. How I wish I had him now.
At the time he died in 1982, he was concerned about the economy and shortly before that about Pakistan getting nukes. I don't know what the deal was then about the economy because at least we used to get decent interest rates on CD's and our bank savings; mortgage rates somewhat higher than now. Way before that it was the domino effect & Korean war. I wish I'd asked more questions. We might not see totally eye-to-eye now; I don't know.
NYC would be a different world for me. Very cosmopolitan. I used to love big cities, got to NYC only once, varied impressions. Have always been a little naive and gullible. I'd have a real problem dealing with liberals in big cities now, bad enough where I am.
“mortgage rates somewhat higher than now.”
Somewhat higher?
That is what I would call an understatement.
.
Growing up, we had to know the topic/s being discussed, or weren't allowed to join in. It was great training ( as we did discuss politics, news, and all manner of different things, as a family ) for being not only aware, engaged in what was happening, but also in debate. That's probably kind of unusual, but it was just "normal" to me and I carried on this tradition, as an adult with a family of my own.
I now live in exurbia, which is VERY different for me, as I'm a CITY person, though I did go to college in a rural place. But people came from all over ( even foreign countries ), so that experience was a different thing completely.
Yes, NYC can have that effect on people not used to it; even for people who grew up in a different large city. So your reaction to it is pretty normal...though one that always amazes me. We all see things/react to things differently, due to our own experiences.
So very sorry that someone attacked you so badly, on another site!
