I Have an Alternative to AA That’s Gotten Thousands off Drinking
New York Post ^ | January 4, 2018 | Lauren Steussy

Up until about three years ago, Annie Grace would end her stressful workdays as a vice president of a global marketing company with a glass of malbec, filled to the top, often the first of five in her daily ritual.

By the time she tucked her two children into bed and kissed her husband good night, her teeth were purple, her breath was thick with the smell of booze and, often, an empty box of wine would be in the trash of their Evergreen, Colo., home. Some weeks, she and her husband would plow through 12 boxes.

“I was not the mom I wanted to be,” Grace, now 39, tells The Post. “I wanted to be giving my family the best of me and I was giving them the absolute worst.”

SMART Recovery (smartrecovery.org) is an AA alternative group with a science-based 4-Point Program.

“SMART Recovery is an abstinence-based, not-for-profit organization with a sensible self-help program for people having problems with drinking and using. It includes many ideas and techniques to help you change your life from one that is self-destructive and unhappy to one that is constructive and satisfying. SMART Recovery is not a spin-off of Alcoholics Anonymous. No one will label you an “alcoholic”, an “addict” or “diseased” nor “powerless”, and if you do not believe in a religion or spirituality, that’s fine, too. We teach common sense self-help procedures designed to empower you to abstain and to develop a more positive lifestyle. When you succeed at following our approach, you may graduate from the program, or you may stay around to help others.”

You know you’re drinking cheap wine when the box has an expiration date. Seriously you can find some decent wines in boxes.

So what? AA does not claim to have exclusive way for alcoholics to quit drinking. It claims to have a way that works

Not discussed here at all that I’ve seen is the latest research treating alcoholics as sugar addicts rather than alcoholics.

It’s compelling research and I write about the link between alcoholism and non-alcoholic obesity.

Will-power is one thing, AA another. But I believe that many alcoholics harbor another condition which males life miserable and unhealthy even when they’re not feeding their addiction.

My Dad was a Marine in the South Pacific in WWII. He died 30 years ago today from alcohol. On his deathbed, he said, “If I can’t drink, I don’t want to live.” And then he died.

I gathered it is more than will power. It's actually a recovery technique that is very biblical. She interrogates the sin, breaks it down so that she is honest about it, why she desires it, discovers its lies, and then applies truth (Romans 12:1-2).

Essentially, she changes her mind by washing her mind. That's my guess.

The first place I encountered wine in a box, was in Australia in 1975. The wine was in a plastic bag, protected by the box. You put the box in the fridge, spout down, the bag collapses as you use the contents, and the unused portion is not exposed to air.

That and the real alcoholic processes alcohol differently than the hard drinker

“I don’t count days and I don’t even call myself ‘sober,’” she says. “I just feel like I’m making conscious choices about drinking every day based on knowledge of what I want.”

Denial isn’t a river in Egypt, Toots.

That’s fine but alcoholics process alcohol differently than other drinkers

You can believe whatever you wish. The science says otherwise

why-you-dont-need-aa-to-quit-drinking I didn’t need AA to quit drinking...I did it every day for years. Turns out, it’s not about quiting, it’s about not starting..I needed AA for that. ~~~~~~ Well you can't actively imbibe while you sleep. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This year I’ll have my 29th AA birthday. AA saved my life.

AA was of tremendous help to get me sober enough to think straight. I initially attended meetings nearly every day for a few months. But if I still had to sit through meetings full of dry drunks I’d have started drinking again just so I could have some peace and quiet! ;)

and if you do not believe in a religion or spirituality, that’s fine, too.

I wonder if she did this so she could avoid acknowledging a higher power.

I was on a flight with a German couple in the 80’s. They were buying all the flights cans of wine. They were taking them back to Germany to their friends. They couldn’t believe wine was in cans. Only in America.
