The end of the Steeler Patriots Game
Vanity ^ | 12/17/17 | a little elbow grease

Posted on 12/17/2017 5:14:29 PM PST by a little elbow grease

As a Steeler fan who just endured that game:

I only have one thing to say about the ending of that game:

As I understand the rule of a “pass catch” it is when a player 1. --- takes possession of the thrown ball , THEN 2. ---- makes what they call “a football move”. That is what determines a catch. 1 and 2.

(This rule I believe was first employed just a few years ago concerning a catch and a subsequent fumble. A catch was determined a catch if the receiver took control of the ball and then made “a football move” before he may fumble it when hit.) --- a pretty crappy rule no matter what.

Well……….. our Steeler player definitely 1. -- caught that ball and had complete control over it, then 2. --- reached out (IN “A FOOTBALL MOVE”)…… never having been touched by the other team (not that that is at all relevant) …….he reached over the goal line and as the ball was in his grasp the ball hit the ground slightly but the ball was still in his grasp.

That is a CERTAIN CATCH AND TOUCHDOWN because he took control of the ball then (reached over the goal line—“a football move”) with the ball and kept control never having been touched by the opponent. Touchdown.

1.--- It was a completed pass THEN 2. --- he made “a football move” reaching into the end zone -- that term is in the rule book. He landed in the end zone keeping control of the ball AFTER THE CATCH AND “THE FOOTBALL MOVE”. (Even if he “bobbled” the ball slightly, he had made a catch AND made that required "football move" as he reached over the goal line. ) Total horsesh*t call.

If the NFL had any balls (that aren’t deflated), they would admit they made a HUGE MISTAKE for the owner of the Patriots, Robert Kraft.

Total BS

The Steelers outplayed those New England characters most of the night, except for that beastly tight end of theirs.

Well……… we’ll see them later this year, and I don’t care where that game will be played, we may have Antonio Brown back for the entire game then.

The Patriots are going down the next time, no matter where it is played. (jmo)

Thu what??? The NFL??? Oh, yeah, I quit watching that set of initials a few years ago. Their crap with the national anthem just went to prove why I stopped.

I thought the player should have been down at the goal line because he was down and the ball had not broken the plane. But I guess that doesn’t matter on a pass.

Either way, the last play of that drive was a dumb, ego centered play by Ben. The smart play would have been to passed off towards the sidelines to at least give them the field goal.

All in all, I was ready to shoot the Pats secondary. Their defense sucked.

Chit call......how many TD’s
have been called this year when a receiver races down the sideline and he reaches out and the ball touches the top of the pylon.....doesn’t matter after the pylon’s been touched if he maintain s control?...he lands out of bounds the ball is considered in control?

I thought it looked like the ball was bobbled when his hand hit the ground after completing the catch.

___________

Yes.

Anyone over the age of 35 or 40 who has seen a lot of footall in their life would KNOW that was a good catch. His veryslight bobble as the ball and his hands touched the ground IN THE END ZONE is meaningless.

That was a catch.

The NFL mystique is gone.

Time for a new league.

Yeah, it was a bad and unnecessary blow for the Steelers, but they and the Patriots had already clinched their divisions. Canning that rule needs to be one of the first orders of business during the off-season meetings.

AFTER banning kneeling during the National Anthem.

There was an argument about this a couple years back. Reaching out is not a football move.

The Steelers did not get robbed. Here is the rule explained by the current and previous NFL spokesmen for officiating:

Tough game to lose, but they weren't robbed. Rules are rules. You don't become a runner until you maintain the catch to the ground. It is clear. You can't fault the player, but his lunge instead of becoming a runner is what caused that to be overturned.

With a 69 yard reception at that point of the game, the Patriots should not have won. But they did.

For all you Freepers who may have the inclination to post some remark about hating the NFL .... don't bother. Your comment is not necessary.. This is merely about football, football officiating, and not politics.

You are entitled to your opinion and to continue watching the bread and circus that the NFL has become. I've decided to tune out so long as disrespecting our flag and nation is tolerated on the field. President Trump and the path of our nation is more important to me right now than a ball game.

It's a shame too because I've been a Patriots fan since the days they were the joke of the NFL. They had a lot of awful seasons leading up to the mid 1990s. When Tom Brady and Bill Belichick came on the scene during the early 2000s, they became a lot of fun to watch.

But no longer. I admit to checking the standings and scores online to see how they are doing but I take no more joy in watching them play the actual games.

That all said, I'd be the first to tell you that the Patriots have gotten a lot of breaks over the years during the Brady era starting with that infamous "tuck rule" ruling during the first Super Bowl run in 2001. All the bounces and favorable rulings seem to go their way more often than not during the Brady era.

I haven't watched a down this year and haven't missed it a bit. Eff the NFL!

(Last I checked, posters don't get to make the rules about what can be posted to their threads here on FR. It is a political forum after all. There are many non-political outlets that can be used for NFL discussions.)
