Actually, it is used for “balance” and is called a ‘Classical Clock Face’.
The IIII is opposite the VIII on watches/clocks and is considered more appealing than
the IV being opposite the VIII.

Read up on it and found what you wrote. Seems IV was not even used by the Romans and was not around until 1500 something.
OK, give the Chinese a pass on this one.
