Josh McCown Deserved a Better Ending Than This
New York Post ^ | December 11, 2017 | Mark Cannizzaro

Josh McCown knew right away.

He knew he was done. Definitely for the rest of Sunday’s game. Likely for the rest of this season. And possibly for his career, which has spanned more than 15 years and eight different teams.

That’s why, when McCown emerged from the trainer’s room in the bowels of Sports Authority Field at Mile High after breaking is left hand late in the third quarter of the Jets’ 23-0 loss to the Broncos, his eyes already were red from the burning of tears.

It probably doesn’t seem that long when you just hit your prime in the 15th year.

For a terrible QB, he had a very long career. Then again... They can’t all be Tom Brady now, can they.

And Tom Brady can’t be Aaron Rodgers.

Some guy who was still playing children’s games as an adult will now need to get a job for grown-ups.

Oh the tragedy.

He’s made over $30 million during his NFL career.

"And Tom Brady can’t be Aaron Rodgers."

But Brady's won five times as many Super Bowls as Rogers....

That he was, and productive too.

On October 25, 1970, against the Pittsburgh Steelers, George Blanda came off the bench to replace injured QB Daryle Lamonica, threw three touchdown passes, and kicked a field goal to lead the Raiders to a 31-14 victory.

The next week in Kansas City, Blanda kicked a 48-yard field goal with just three seconds remaining to tie the Chiefs 17-17.

The following Sunday, Blanda again replaced an injured Lamonica, throwing a touchdown pass to tie Cleveland at 20 with 1:34 remaining. He then kicked a 52-yard field goal with three seconds left to earn a 23-20 Raiders win.

The magic continued the next week when Blanda threw a TD pass with 2:28 left to defeat Denver 24-19.

He completed his five-game miracle streak with a 16-yard field goal with just seven seconds left to defeat San Diego 20-17.

Blanda continued to impress over the course of the season and, at 43 years old, became the oldest quarterback to play in a championship game. Although the Raiders lost to the Baltimore Colts that day, Blanda accounted for all 17 points for the Sliver and Black.

Draft Baker Mayfield or Mason Rudolph, let McCown act as the 3rd QB and mentor, and Petty backs up, leaving the mistake by the Meadowlands Hackenberg on the practice squad. Start the draftee right away and live with the growing pains.

No he can’t. Brady still has to play football games and then play in the Super Bowl.

I know that the NFL is in doghhouse right now and millionaire athletes are getting knocked for painting themselves as victims but....

There is something to be said for a man working his ass off to get to the highest levels of his profession. It is right to acknowledge and reward that kind of dedication and success.

If there was some system to determine who the very best accountant or teacher or electrician was, we should honor those people who proved themselves to be one of the best 32 or 64 in world at their craft. If there was some type of injury one could sustain that would force a teacher out of teaching or an accountant out of accounting, it would also be appropriate to acknowledge when that happened to one of the best in the world.

Brady’s great, but Rodgers takes a team that barely beats the Browns and makes them great. If he had had the team surrounding Brady, who knows who could beat them.
