Miami Police want drivers to be on the lookout for crooks trying to steal airbags.
Just this week, three men were arrested for stealing several airbags from cars earlier this month.
According to police, thieves are targeting Acura and Honda models.
Police said theyre stealing the airbags between the hours of 1:00 and 5:00 a.m.
The National Insurance Crime Bureau said airbag theft and fraud are growing crime trends.
A new airbag from a car dealer costs around $1,000, according to the NICB, but can be purchased for $50-$200 on the streets.
If you have any information, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.

So, what number do I call for one of those cheap bags?

They’ve been doing this for years, decades.
Usually they steal the car and then dump it, minus the airbags.
This happened to my brother.

This happened to a co-worker about 20 years ago. Stole his airbags from his Infiniti J-30.

Install it in other cars at body shops.

A few years ago I rear ended a car stopped at a light while doing about 7MPH (black ice). His car didn't have a scratch,my airbag went off.
I would have gladly put it on ebay for $1,000
To: nwrep
Common insurance scam. The body shop pays the black market price for the airbag, but bills the insurance company the price for a factory air bag.

Yup, this has been going on since the 80's when air bags started appearing on cars more frequently.
The 1975 Cadillacs were among the first cars to offer air bags as an option.

Thats a gorgeous color and interior decor. When America was still America and you could still tell cars apart. Then they threw CAFE at us in order to get everyone into Yugo coffins on wheels.

Airbags use an explosive device to set them off; I’m thinking terrorists (muzzies) needing them to make bombs??

High prices for technical equipment, for which is difficult or impossible to check functionality, is an invitation for crooks to create convincing counterfeits.
There are evidently handheld radio antennas which retail for about $20 and counterfeits are available for about $5. They work poorly but who's going to know unless they have sophisticated test equipment.
Similarly, it's hard to test a replacement airbag. Anybody who has their airbags replaced as part of a repair should probably pay close attention to this issue.
To: nickcarraway
I know it is extremely easy and quick to remove an airbag. I replaced the steering wheel on my 2012 F150 this week and I had the airbag out in under 30 seconds.

Is it really a $1000 bucks a bag? Driver, passenger, curtain bags. That’s expensive.

And not just here, but cars built overseas by the big three in Europe,S. America and Australia, as well as American Motors, Studebaker and Packard going further back had their own unique looks to them. Vauxhalls, Opels and Holdens were easily identendifiable as GM cars, same with Ford Prefects, Anglias, the old Aussie Falcons, etc. As well as the other makes. Now, most cars built, sure they're very well engineered, but styling, EEEH

I hate these things! You try to pack a family in a sedan, and little kids aren’t supposed to sit in the front seat anymore, because the airbag becomes a net hazard in that situation. No wonder larger families are forced into vans and SUVs.
My wife has a 1994 Roadmaster Wagon, and the horn switch doesn’t work. But the horn switch is integrated into the driver’s airbag, so replacements are next to impossible to find.
