I thought the local show with Steve Rose on PBS called Ruckus was over. But I see it is back with of all people Mike Shanin who was dumped off KMBZ radio few years ago. Format is slightly different. Lot of idiots on that show in the other version. Rose left the Johnson County Sun then the paper ended. He is or was at Kansas City Star. I don’t read any paper anymore. I do check out The Pitch for a community calendar of events online.

This tax bill is horrible, being pushed for a win only. It will raise taxes on millions in the $100K to $200K income range. Many do not care, but it will haunt republicans in November 2018.

Yes, and even those below $100K - they want to make tuition scholarships paid to students taxable. Why do this to those surviving on $12K - $30K per year? This is insane. Republicans don't care - they are serving their masters big corporation lobbyist. Democrats know they can campaign against this horror in 2018.

They are eliminating the personal/dependent exemptions. This is a tax on larger families like mine. The new standard does not offset the additional taxable income.

I agree. Raising taxes on two earner families to give the gop establishment globalist corporate donors a permanent tax cut will likely cost the House. I know I will not vote for a GOP congressman, paul cook, who favored dirtbag establishment US Chamber if Commerce over gop voters. This tax bill hurts trump voters. What idiots.

If you are a Bob Dole Republican, as I generally am

Just come on out of the closet and admit you're a Democrat. Everyone will be happier.

You wont be applauding the great victory when all of us trump voters refuse to relect these dirtbag gop congress members for voting to increase our taxes to fund the gop establishment corporate permamnent tax cut. So enjoy your victory. I think it will be short lived.

You are clueless. You forgot to add that all the personal exemptions disappear.

Well that is a separate issue. I agree that eliminating the personal exemption will cause some large families to pay more. But that has nothing to do with SALT.

Yup. The gop faction of the uniparty is desperately trying to lose the 2018 election. This tax bill is really a 4 fer. Pay off their benefactors, lose the 2018 election, set the stage for impeachment, and reopen the gates for unlimited immigration.

But be sure to vote. Because it makes sooo much difference!

Politics is a scam and we’re suckers for playing.

It’s all very complicated shell game. But the bottom line is they’re TRYING TO RAISE MORE MONEY to offset the huskiness tax cuts. They’re operating under the Byrd Rule that requires “paying” for tax cuts. So they’re “paying” for cuts in business taxes by taking deductions and exemptions away from middle class individual filers. You say the middle class won’t pay more, under some complicated calculus, but that contradicts the whole purpose of getting rid of those deductions and exemptions - to raise money so they satisfy the Byrd Rule.

Whatever your slide rule says, theirs says they will be getting more from the middle class - so the deficit will be kept down and the Byrd Rule will be complied with

Yes, our personal exemptions go away

The bills defenders on this board apparently haven’t been listening to the bills sponsors: getting rid of the deductions and exemptions is DESIGNED to RAISE MONEY TO OFFSET THE CORPORTE TAX CUTS. That’s the purpose - and if they’re designed to raise money for the government, there’s no way people won’t pay more money to the government

I don’t think so. Even if you have three or four personal exemptions it is difficult to conceive a situation where a middle class taxpayer would pay more after considering the tax rate cuts and the increase in the standard deduction. You’ve got to have a considerable SALT deduction to make that happen. They are financing the business tax cuts by assuming that the supply side effect will offset the cut. I am not sure how sound that assumption is but that’s what they are doing.

Getting rid of SALT is intended to raise more money for the government. That means there will be millions of people paying more to the government - BECAUSE THATS THE PURPOSE OF GETTING RID OF THE DEDUCTION! They’re trying to comply with the Byrd Rule that requires new revenues to offset new tax cuts.

Like Democrats, to pay for business tax cuts, they’re raising taxes on the middle class instead of cutting govt spending

Besides which they don’t really have a choice on the business tax cuts. We have the highest corporate tax rate in the world. That can’t continue if you want to maintain your competitive edge.

Do you know what the Byrd a Rule is? They’re trying to limit the deficit effects of the business tax cuts. So their own budget calculations call for getting more from the middle class. You can deny that’s what they’re doing, but their own sponsors say differently

Even if all you say is true, I STILL have trouble seeing how the country will be better off with Democrats running the place and appointing judges.

...or maybe it’s ‘just me’.

If they are, it’s not because they are increasing taxes. They are assuming a higher growth rate.
