The dome that opened in 1992 was flattened in 15 seconds at 7:30 am. The Georgia World Congress Center Authority said prior to the blast that it should take 12 seconds for the explosives to go off plus another 3 seconds for sections of grandstands to be on the ground.
The 71,250-seat dome -- which was the site of high school football state championships, Peach Bowls, SEC championship games, two Super Bowls, 1996 Olympic basketball, three Final Four NCAA basketball tournaments, concerts, pro wrestling and other events -- has been replaced by the $1.6 billion Mercedes-Benz Stadium next door.

Sort of ironic - demolishing a pro football stadium when pro football itself is in a “free-fall”.
The Skydome/Rogers Centre, home of the Toronto Blue Jays, is now 28 years old. It is in good condition, has had some renovations over the years, but is essentially the same facility as when it was opened. I can’t imagine it being replaced even 20 years from now. Only something on the scale of an Olympic games or NFL franchise (neither of which will happen in my lifetime) would generate the need for a larger stadium in Canada’s largest metropolitan area (almost 6.5 million people, compared to 5.7 million in Greater Atlanta).
The Skydome was funded mostly by public money and was a huge money pit before the Ontario government sold it in the 1990’s (the buyers paid pennies on the dollar). The whole enterprise created significant cynicism among taxpayers, and it is now much more difficult to get political support for these mega pro sport stadia. We face the same type of corporate blackmail here, “fund our stadium or we’ll relocate”. The Calgary Flames of the NHL have been trying to get public funding for a new hockey arena and it hasn’t gone well.

That's how the ODome on the UF Campus was when I attended there.
The most ridiculous is The Ballpark in Arlington, which opened in 1994, it was a fine ballpark, and they’re already replacing it, ridiculous.
One of my boys lives in Atlanta, in Midtown, miles away. He said he could feel the thump from the implosion.

The Astrodome holds that title. 52 years old and it will cost more to demolish than to build. The county still pays a hefty amount to just let it sit there

Consider that the Flavian amphitheater, or the Colosseum, was built in 72 A.D.,was used for its original purpose until 400 A.D., and as housing from 800 A.D. Until about 1350 A.D. It is still strong enough to have tourists go through.
Having been to some but not all of Detroit's relatively new ( one brand new, the new "Joe" ) Stadium, it is about the experience and part of that is these new Taurus's on the outside that house huge food courts that in the case of the new Red Wings home doubles as a Corporate Venue, I believe their are businesses also within this outside ring. Not to mention new parking structures etc. So much has transpired info tech wise, I wonder if it isn't easier to build a new with provisions for this stuff ( and stuff coming ) and every other mandate ( energy, accessibility, etc ) that every sub-market and person must be considered for their entertainment dollar. Not to mention new "security" concerns...
Very unconvincing article. It does present the case as why the Falcons need taxpayer money to replace their other taxpayer funded stadium. However, it doesn’t present a case as to why the citizens of atlanta need this and will profit from it.
Folks who don’t live anywhere near Georgia sure seem to have an opinion on how the Falcons are housed
You are a crony capitalist who believes in corporate welfare. You must have been part of the awarded contract for the stadium. If the falcons or any other business wants a building for their business they can pay for it themselves. What is going on in your shthole city of Atlanta isn’t that different than what the NFL has pulled in a dozen other cities.
