To protect the brain and preserve the chance of recovery. The aim is to treat other medical issues while the brain is less vulnerable due to the coma.

Dementia can often hit years before diagnoses. There are misconceptions out there. His lifestyle may have been a factor in him developing Dementia or even having it earlier. Dementia patients may be well aware of who they are, recognize their family and friends, etc, even up to the end but can't remember eating a meal. My sister died from it 2 years ago at age 62. She had gone through several Strokes prior and likely had began Dementia about 5-7 years prior. She knew me up until she went in a Coma. At Christmas time she talked to her kids over the phone and was well aware of all going on. In late March she passed.

Last February my Mom had a bad Stroke a bleeder. She was in ICU for just under three weeks then transferred to Rehab for three more weeks. In those three weeks she developed Dementia. By the last of April she had passed at age 86. I've worked in nursing homes before {non medical} and hers was one of the quickest cases I had seen.

I can name you at least 25 people who I know who exercised and ran or did other sports who cant any more because of the knee and hip replacements they needed when their joints wore out from all the use. As my bone doc friend used to say, I am treating lawyers with the bones and joints of end of life mill workers

If your genes say you are going to die at fifty you die at fifty. If there is a work around, like pacemakers or implanted fibulator to cope with the genetic issue, great!

He is indeed a massive alcoholic and his dementia could well be Korsakovs.

He was too famous too young, probably. It probably didn’t help him.

Poor guy. Prayers up.

Probably they put him into an induced coma BECAUSE of the organ failure, so they could gather his loved ones from far and wide.

When on earth did Librium become an “anti-alcoholism drug”?

I never even heard of such a drug.

Librium is widely used as a detox medication for it stops the advent of the DTs. It is not an anti-alcoholism drug.

Ironically, Korsakov’s is not caused by alcohol itself. The condition is actually a nutritional deficiency from replacing nourishment with booze.

Alcoholics have a kind of early onset dementia. Commonly known as wet brain or Korsocoffs (sp)syndrome.

If they’d chosen healthy lifestyles you have to wonder if they wouldn’t have lived a nice life into their 80s. Sad,

I work with really nice people who have really nice lives. They don’t all live into their 80s with little problems. They have dementia, ALS, and other motor neuron disease. I recently helped a 52 year old with the new diagnosis of early onset dementia put her life into order to face her dark years.

I don’t think it’s dementia either. I think it’s alcohol. I know someone who has been drinking consistently for decades and her short term memory is shot.
