Paris: €673k Worth of Vintage Whiskies Stolen From Liquor Store

The famous Maison du Whisky liquor store in Paris was targeted thieves who looted some €673,000 worth of vintage bottles including one that cost nearly €200,000.

When the thieves broke into the Maison du Whisky - one of the French capital's most famous liquor stores on Sunday night they knew exactly what they were after.

After smashing their way through the metal shutter and the door of the store located in the on Rue d'Anjou in the plush eighth arrondissement of Paris, not far from the Elysée Palace, the thieves headed straight for the most expensive bottles.

According to Le Parisien newspaper one bottle they looted was worth €195,000.

In all, the thieves made away with 69 bottles, which they packed into sports bags before fleeing on foot.

The store's boss reported the break-in directly at the local police station on Monday morning. Detectives have opened an investigation.

The Maison du Whisky is well known among the capital's whisky lovers as it sells some of the top whiskies from Scotland, Ireland, Japan and the US as well as other spirits.

It's not clear whether the thieves were whisky connoisseurs or simply hoping to sell on their loot to the highest bidder.

But one thing is for certain, they will no doubt find a market for their plunder in whisky loving France.

Whisky has become an ever-increasingly popular tipple in France, despite the fact it makes so many of its own spirits such as Cognac.

A survey in March 2016 revealed that whisky was now so popular in France that is rapidly becoming that country's national drink.

According to researchers, the average whisky consumption by a French adult is 2.15 litres a year - and that's on top of all the wine, cognac and pastis they drink.

To put it in perspective, that's 140 million litres of whisky in total, which would fill 45 Olympic swimming pools.

That was enough to put France at the top of the global league table for the biggest whisky drinkers in the world.

Not only does France top the world table for whisky drinkers, but the tipple is also the most popular spirit in France, which is not short of popular spirits.

Some 38 percent of the spirits downed in France are whiskies and France is the world's biggest importer of Scotch whisky – some 200 million bottles are downed each year.

From the web, because you all want to know... it was Japanese whisky!

“According to a press release from the Maison du Whisky there are only 41 bottles in the world of Karuizawa 1960, known as “The Squirrel,” which comes in a bottle with a little gold box hanging around its neck. Because of its rarity, it could be deemed priceless, but the mercenary French press calculated its value at about €195,000 ($230,000).

The Daily Beast’s Tokyo correspondent, Jake Adelstein, who is something of a connoisseur, reports that the distillery was founded in 1955 in the summer resort area of Karuizawa. It produced single malts aged 12, 15, and 17 years, but the distillery closed for good in November 2011—just before the Japanese whisky boom took off. All the stock was sold in 2012. Water from nearby mountains, and sherry barrels for aging, gave Karuizawa a distinctive taste according to Japan’s Whisky Magazine.”

I would not be that certain. It is just a commodity...imagine how many Alahu Akbar stuff that amount of money will sponsor.
