Sandy was most certainly a hurricane. It may not have been a hurricane at landfall (a point which is scientifically debatable...which as a meteorologist I dispute (as do other scientists))...but there is no doubt it was a hurricane.

The reason why I say it is scientifically debatable that it was still a hurricane at landfall was that there is a very good case to be made it was still warm core. Certainly, it was undergoing extratropical transition but IMO it wasn't fully there. The NHC transitioned it quicker...likely due to political considerations, given their forecasts.

It was till about 120 minutes before it came ashore at Barnegat Light. At that time it was no longer tropical but that is an unimportant difference. It had 80mph winds and was 1100 miles in width.
