Cans of Spam have become a common item that's being stolen from Honolulu stores and then sold on the streets for quick cash, according to authorities.
Ra Long, who owns a convenience store in the city, said shoplifters have typically targeted alcohol in the past, but recently more cans of Spam have gone missing, Hawaii News Now reported . Related Searches Best Buy HonoluluSpam EmailSpam RecipesSpam Musubi
"I mean you try to keep an eye on it, but if they run, you just can't leave the counter and chase them," Long said. "So you just got to take the hit."
Honolulu police said they took a report of a man lifting a case of the canned meat from a store earlier this month.
Kimo Carvalho, a spokesman for the Institute for Human Services, said people are stealing Spam because it's easy to sell. "It's quick cash for quick drug money," Carvalho said.
Hawaiians eat millions of cans of Spam a year, the nation's highest per-capita consumption of the processed meat, which is cobbled together from a mixture of pork shoulder, ham, sugar and salt.
The state's love affair with Spam began during World War II, when rationing created just the right conditions for the rise of a meat that needs no refrigeration and has a remarkably long shelf life (indefinitely, the company says).
Ann Kondo Corum, who grew up in Hawaii in the 1950s and has written several Spam-inspired cookbooks, has attributed Spam's popularity partly to Hawaii's large Asian population. "Asians eat a lot of rice. Spam is salty, and it goes well with rice,"
Be still, my heart. :-)
I’m gonna have to be Debbie Downer-this “food” item was not served at home when I was a kid, but I grew up on a ranch-when I was in college, it was “dorm food” sometimes when I was really broke, but I never ate it after that-but I see that a lot of people here did/do like to eat it. To each their own preferences, but I still call the stuff what my 1st husband did-Sh** Posing As Meat...
Honolulu’s streets are filed with thousands of the walking dead, brains burned out from drugs.
Somehow I wouldn’t be surprised if that was real.
I know if I had to eat spam some drugs would help it go down. :-)
True, but I just stalk up on tuna and salmon, and make beef jerky.
Well done!
Mom would buy spam, slice it up and put in baking dish with brown sugar glaze on it and bake in oven. Serve with mashed potatoes and green beans, not a bad meal.

SPAM HAM
What is that jar of SPIC next to the can of Spam?punch lines to ensue but one would be kicked of FR.
Reporters do not want to go to the trouble to actually tell what is going on. Spam, other canned meats, liquor- basically anything non perishable that people will buy, are being stolen to be resold at small or “black market” stores. Pretty easy to make money with a store if you can get the items for free for resale. Spam is catchy in the title because no one can figure out why people would steal Spam, the truth is many things are stolen to stock the black market stores.
We have the same issues here on the mainland in many cities, except what is happening here is they get food stamps through fraud and use them to buy products for their stores.
If we had real journalists perhaps they could investigate and find out the need for black market stores.
I’d forgotten about the ever-present ramen noodles-that were STILL dorm food when my daughter was in college...
Pretty sure that was when they were only on radio. Before my time too.
ASPIC?
my grandmother would make aspic salads; icky, whatever it is...
Trans-ocean sailors stock Spam, and there’s Hawaiistuck out far from everywhere else.
