Croc! Croc! Croc!' The terrifying moment pig hunters open fire on a giant crocodile...
Daily Mail (Australia/UK) ^ | 20th October 2017 | Brooke Rolfe

Head-to-toe camouflage proved an inadequate disguise for two pig hunters attempting to cross a crocodile infested creek in Australia's Northern Territory.

Alarming helmet camera footage shows the armed duo trudging through shallow water before a monster croc comes charging towards them from just metres away.

As the giant animal bounds closer to the men, one can be heard yelling 'croc, croc, croc' while the other makes a swift dash away from the water.

The hunter filming the event then unleashes fire on the huge reptile, aiming his shots directly towards the crocodile's head.

Video can be more easily seen at: https://www.liveleak.com/view?i=663_1508408109 (I've found the Daily Mail's video player leaves a lot to be desired).

These fellows were lucky they were pig shooting and so had some reasonable firepower at their disposal. On the other hand, I suppose they wouldn't have been there if they weren't pig shooting.

They were decked out in (Aussie?) military gear?

I presume the rifle was FN-FAL 308.

I could not get the video to play tho it did show some still images.

I live in Florida and we do have crocs but only in the extreme Southern part of the state. From what I have seen and read, they are much worse than gators and gators are bad enough.

One of my earliest memories is of my Father killing a gator in a nearby pond. He shot it with a war bring back Luger. Back then it was standard procedure to kill every one you saw.

Being Australia, I would guess on it being a .303 Lee Enfield.

Is he shooting a semi-auto? I didn’t think they were allowed.

Very poor video but from just a fraction of a second glance, it did look like an FAL. Definitely semi-auto.

I could not tell. Looked a bit like the HK-91, but images were pretty partial and rough.

Crossing the Everglades in Florida you could see the gators in the reeds on the side of the road.It never occurred to me for a second to get out of the car and investigate.

The front sight looked a lot like an HK design, but impossible to be sure.

There were three hunters. At the end you see two in front of the cameraman.

People can get semi-autos if needed for special purposes. This looks pretty justified.

There are a lot of myths about Australian gun laws around - including the one that all semi-automatic weapons are banned.

You can't own a semi-automatic on a basic gun licence (Category A/B), but getting a Category C licence which allows for basic semi-autos with a magazine capacity of up to five rounds (and this man fired five rounds) is not that hard - you just have to provide a reason for it and pass a slightly more stringent background check (old criminal convictions more than ten years in the past generally won't stop somebody getting an A/B licence if they've been lawabiding since - but they will have a hard time getting more than that). Pig shooting is a perfectly valid reason for a C licence to be issued. And if you are a professional hunter (which these fellows could be), you can even get a D licence which allows a much wider range of semi-autos with greater capacity.

Good to know. Still, it would be nice to have more than a 5 round magazine.

I don’t live in the United States. I live in California. We can have 10 round magazines here.

How did they mistake a crocodile for a pig?

No, I didn’t read past the title.

I was in error - Category C does allow 10 round magazines for rifles - 5 rounds is for shotguns. Still, one of the key differences between C and D is the magazine limitation.

Glad to hear that Australia is not as bad gun wise as I thought. I spent some time there back in the early 70’s and really liked it and the people.
