If the band director encouraged this, he should be fired and the band “disbanded.”

If the band disobeyed his directive that they not do this, he should resign. And the band be disbanded.

Fire the band director, fire any teachers who convinced them to do this, and cancel “band class” so they can’t get an academic credit for this nonsense. Perhaps that will bring them to their senses about respecting this country’s national anthem and this country, which has given them so much already. They CANNOT be allowed to get away with this.

I realize that hs students aren't on scholarship, but they do get school credit and a step up in getting scholarships to college...

if they refuse their assignments, then kick them out of the band...
