Ames High School Band Members Leave Field Before Playing National Anthem

The national anthem football controversy continues to have an impact at the high school level.

The Des Moines Register reports 13 members of the Ames High School band walked off the field before playing the national anthem on Friday night. This happened before the school hosted Lincoln on the football field.

Earlier on Friday, student leaders read a statement to their classmates saying, "the decision to change from a patriotic USA to pink-out theme for the student section was the decision of the Ames High student body alone. Is this political? Maybe. But we are proud of how our students showed great leadership today by coming together."

The statement also encouraged students to link arms at the football game, show love, and pack the stands. Efforts to reach the high school principal and the band director have not been returned.

They were liberal even when I attended nearby Ballard of Huxley. Many of their parents work for the college.

There are others here, too, both mothers and fathers. However, there’s also a subset who are openly repulsed by reproduction.

If the band director encouraged this, he should be fired and the band “disbanded.”

If the band disobeyed his directive that they not do this, he should resign. And the band be disbanded.

No but the people in orchestra were.

Me, no music talent at all. I could not play a kazoo if my life depended on it.

Gezuz, why do people still go to these football games? I wouldn’t be caught dead supporting these people. It’s now infected high school football. What an ugly farce.

I wonder if my freedom of speech means I can wave a confederate flag at their games or at one of their schools?

Not enough people seem to make that connection, IMO.

Our opponents had a big problem with the Confederate flag and with memorials to Confederate soldiers -- who are officially US veterans. A lot of people were persuaded to back down and not push the issue. No one wanted to be a racist. No one wanted to "support slave owners". And so Confederate flags became almost universally hidden away as shameful things.

And here we are -- take down your American flags. That symbol of racism is no longer OK ...

It's got to stop.

Holding this republic together is difficult! I see an erosion of morals, ethics, work ethic, family, respect, God, etc., the very fabric that keeps this country great! Destroying it can occur in less than one generation. There are a growing number of easy-way-out “citizens” out there that have no clue they are destroying this country and their future. By the time they wise up, it may be too late for them.

A high schooler is not old enough to have any more sense doing this except to just do anything to rebel against authority.. and given the climate lately, they figure they can rebel and get by with it. They are copycats and their problem beside youth, is their parents fall into the same category. The undisciplined and ignorant parents who let kids do this.

In years past, parents wouldn’t let this pass.

I remember one time some seniors walked out of the school and thought they had made a milestone. It was led by the undisciplined son of undisciplined parents. I thought it was dumb and if my son had done that I would have been on his case... after his father was through with him. But my kids would not have been tempted... they had their future in mind... and had no-nonsense parents who set a lot of things straight about life and what was expected, by the time they were in first grade.

Today too many kids are lost and have no moral/ethical/patriotic foundations.

Fire the band director, fire any teachers who convinced them to do this, and cancel “band class” so they can’t get an academic credit for this nonsense. Perhaps that will bring them to their senses about respecting this country’s national anthem and this country, which has given them so much already. They CANNOT be allowed to get away with this.

It’s a shame that they lost. Glad they carried the flag before the game.

So what if a student were to boycott the kneelers and refused to play at the game. Would that affect their grade?

That's a reply a teacher would make.

The issue is the fracturing of America from the basic level .... childhood.

I've been fighting my own public high school for four years ... they have not demanded the pledge of allegiance in at least five years.

“Gee....do ya think some of their teachers put ‘em up to it??”

Class by class, year by year, until the students reach this point.
