The NYT article has two horrible flaws in logic--if the NFL buys into it they will be burnt toast forever.

Fallacy 1--Correlation is not causation.

Yes, Trump attacked the NFL and yes, many fans boycotted the league. However, Trump was not the _cause_ of the boycott, he was just a part of the outrage shared by many fans.

Fallacy 2--Length of outrage on some issues is a predictor of length of outrage on every issue.

The NFL snafu is unusual because sports teams and their fans normally have a very close relationship, almost like a marriage. The league violated that trust, and has become a serially cheating spouse at this point by linking itself with radical black racist public policy positions. While some fans may forgive most will not, and this damage is beginning to look long-term and perhaps permanent.

Correct analysis would be:

The NFL needs to ignore this article, work to restore the bond with its fans. They can start by firing people--starting with Goodell, then removing some owners, managers and players from the league.
