Another Blood Pressure Vanity

Just asking some insight on BP. For years I have had high blood. Never did anything with it even when told I was in danger. Last month my legs begin to feel weak and painful and tingling. I would wake up without a thing, then about 2 hours at work it would begin. No chest pains or shortness of breath. It would start to disappear when I went home. The next day I would again wake up with nothing but then it would start in my arms and hands. Legs would be slightly weak but no pain. My job is stressful.

I work from 5am to 2 or 3pm and I walk constantly trouble shooting. Went to the pharmacy and took my BP and it was 158 over 102. Varied from 158/102 to 144/92 or 98. Saw the doctor and she immediately started me on lisinopril and hydrochlothiazide 10mg/12.5mg. She said I looked good and sounded good. but my symptoms where an indication of stage 1 to stage 2 hypertension. Been taking the drug and dieting for 4 days now and noticed that I am loosing a little weight and sleeping more. Still have the symptoms. They gave me a BP machine to monitor my BP. I noticed today that the symptoms started to disappear and I immediately took my BP and it was 115 over 82. Then a little while later started back up. Is this drug any good and why would this just start up? I am 58 and 146 lbs. Not overweight. Both my parents are still alive and both have had bypass surgery. I smoke half a pack a day and only drink red wine, no hard liquor. Went last year to the cardiac doctor and my blood was "rock solid". ANybody else experience these symptoms?

On those same drugs for six months. My numbers have barely dropped. Frankly, I believe the wee little bit they dropped was due to low carb and a bit of weight loss and not in any way due to the meds. They haven’t gotten me down to normal range.

Just a heads up. I was on Lisinipril and had to get off of it. At night it made me cough and cough and cough, I never got any sleep and had to keep cough drops under my pillow. It happens to some people. If it happens to you get to the doctor and tell them your symptoms. I am thrilled to be on something else that does not make me cough and I can sleep at night!!

My housemate refused to go on traditional BP meds. Too many very negative side-effects for his taste.

He uses "blood pressure factors" by "Michael's naturopathic programs"

http://www.michaelshealth.com

Includes:

--Vitamin D3 from lanolin
--Vitamin B6
--calcium (from/as Dicalcium Phosphate and Calcium Amino Acid Chelate)
--Magnesium (Magnesium Amino Acid Chelate)
--Manganese (Manganese Amino Acid Chelate)
--Potassium (Potassium Amino Acid Chelate)

And also included in the largish pill is a Proprietary combination of:
--Hawthorn Berry
--Apple Pectin
--Garlic Bulb Powder
--Hops flower
--Valerian Root
--Taurine
--Cayenne fruit
--Celery Seed

He also takes 2-3 tablespoons of Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar in water with some honey 1-2 times/day.

He has some beet powder as well as juice but hasn't needed them and tends not to take them.

He also takes rat fish liver oil from Norway (not cheap but powerful).

He also takes about 2-3 tablespoons of coconut oil 1-2 times/day.

Get off the lisinopril, that shit is poison. It should be outlawed. It can cause kidney failure.

I smoke half a pack a day and only drink red wine, no hard liquor.

Since you asked, I'd kick the cigarettes if I were you. That may not be the only reason for your BP issues, but nicotine raises blood pressure by constricting blood vessels.

Huh...quit smoking...duh..

Smoking narrows your arteries and probably causing in part your leg pain...

Much easier to deal with HB pressure than cancer..

hydrochlothiazide 10mg/12.5mg

Make sure your Doc monitors your blood potassium levels. HCTZ can prevent normal potassium uptake.

Was taking the same dosage as you on a reduced sodium diet, played hell with my electrolytes to the point I started going into convulsions and called EMTs right away. Took two days in hospital with KCl drip to recover and a month of potassium supplements, 750mg. HCTZ was id’d as culprit along with the reduced sodium levels.

YMMV, just be aware....

HCTZ can prevent normal potassium uptake.

Thiazide diuretics cause increased potassium excretion in urine, leading to possible hypokalemia (low potassium) if serum potassium levels are not checked regularly.

BTW, I'm on 50mg hydrochlorothiazide/day and have had mild hypokalemia (3.0-3.5) off and on for years. Increased potassium intake is a must. Now that I've lost weight, I'm going to talk to my primary and get my dose reduced to 25mg/day. The lower circulating volume secondary to diuretics is causing my systolic to < 110mghg.

I concur with Anonymous Conservative’s advice. You can also try to find a physician - MD or DO who practices holistic medicine. They actually do exist! We have one (MD) who will prescribe pharma meds, but uses supplements as the basis for nutritionally supporting the body.

No matter what approach you select, I think it is important to understand thoroughly what we are up against as we age. Darlin’ and I have recently finished reading this book: “Reverse Heart Disease NOW” - by Stephen T. Sinatra, MD and James C. Roberts, MD.

The authors are cardiovascular surgeons who learned that the conventional approach to CURING heart disease with only bypasses, and heavy medications is a losing proposition. They have found means to support the body - especially the heart and circulatory system and give it what it needs to heal. They do not throw out the surgery or the extreme power of using the strong meds for urgent interventions, but they have found the keys to helping people gain better levels of health.

I have family members who are nurses and doctors, and they have taught me much and been patient with my many questions over the years. This book is highly credible and summarizes a lot of truth about information I have seen previously from other researches and sources I have read. We practice many of the tips given in the book.

The process of what actually happens in the body during the degradation into heart disease is described in a way that is easily understandable. The solutions are just as easily understood. It is what I consider to be the “Owners Manual” about heart disease which many of us have been missing.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!!

About 8 years ago lost a lot of vision in my right eye due to retinal oclusion probably caused by high bp. Started takiing low dose Lisinopril which lowered it some. This summer started eating dollarweed/pennywort every morning which lowered it some more. BTW, most vision came back after short time on steroid eye drop.
