The hole in the other window was so the actual shooters could escape to the roof using suction cups on their hands and feet.

Different rooms, one window was in a separate room. The smoke alone would warrant a need for cross ventilation...and dont discount the terror of having fire coming down from 2 different angles. Maybe...
