Those in the United States with access to such equipment tuned in and listened in awe as the beeping Soviet spacecraft passed over America several times a day. Beep-Beep-Beep--Bobby Day & the Satellites (1957)

I was 4 and I recall family and neighbors standing in the front yard watching as this little star passed across the early evening sky in SE Washington.

In the fall of 1957 I was a student at the Squadron Officer School at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama. On Sputnik day we walked into the big auditorium to start our day of classes. The audio system was playing the beeps that had been recorded earlier that morning. It was a big surprise to all of us, but especially to me, since I'd come from Wright Field to the school, but had no idea the Soviets were that close to a launch. I'd attended an MIT short course on satellites earlier that year, but the focus of the course was the U.S. Navy's plans to launch a satellite.

That order means that lately a lot of Nork generals have ended up in Dear Leader’s bulgogi.
What does he do with all the medals?
