Was Mr. K on to something? Chorus grows to drop the national anthem at sports events
KC Star ^ | 9/28/2017 | Lisa Gutierrez

During the Vietnam War, in the summer of 1972, Kansas City Royals owner Ewing Kauffman decided to stop having the national anthem played before games because he was tired of fans “disrespecting” it.

He said he saw “some signs of disrespect during the playing of the song, mostly in attitude and late arrivals walking around.”

So the team announced the “Star-Spangled Banner” would only be played on Sundays, holidays and special occasions.

Kauffman quickly changed his mind.

The team received dozens of phone calls and letters, almost all emotional, almost all indignant, so the Royals reinstated the anthem before every home game.

Sports Illustrated predicted around that time that the “Star-Spangled Banner” would probably always be part of sports, but people have long wondered whether it should be.

In the heat over the last few days of the #TakeAKnee controversy, the case that the “Star-Spangled Banner” is out of place at professional sporting events is being made yet again.

A chorus is swelling, and it sounds like this: It’s time to stop singing the national anthem at sporting events.

Or, as former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura asked in a blunt tweet over the weekend: “Why the hell do we even need the ‘national anthem’ before they play?”

Someone enlighten me. Why must the national anthem be played or sung before every sporting event?

What's the point. It's just a stupid game.

A sporting event has nothing to do with patriotism.

It's nonsensical in my opinion.

Why? To acknowledge there is some cause greater than ourselves. To acknowledge we are all of a common tribe.

John Stuart Mill, On Liberty (1859)

“War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.”

So that decent, God-fearing patriots will feel "included."

So everyday, before we begin our workday at the office, all the employees sing the national anthem. Sounds like something they might do in N. Korea.

I don’t know about this.

At all.

I think this has the possibility to break the NFL. Bigly.

The games are broadcast to servicemen and women overseas. This would certainly show our gratitude to them and the jobs they do for US; the extreme risk they take day in and day out. We honor THEM by this anthem. NOT to include it in the broadcast is to kick them out the door and lock it behind them. IT SHOULD BE PLAYED AND GIVEN THE RESPECT DESERVING!

Do you know of an office where they sing the Star Spangled Banner? It is way too hard to sing, anyway. There is no tradition to sing it before a workday.

If you want to sing a national anthem before work, you may have to move to North Korea.

I went to the Ohio State v Northwestern game with my Dad - a veteran - just after 9-11. Seeing the Flag raised and hearing the National Anthem were the most important events of the day (besides being with him). Ohio State was also how my parents got out of poverty. (To be fair it was the GI bill that got my Dad to Ohio State). So we are Buckeyes and it matters. I therefore respectfully disagre with your position. To some of us even the “stupid game” really does matter.

So the left will win again, take away a patriotic, unifying moment and replace it with nothing, with them.

I am very much in favor of performing the National Anthem before sporting events. And kudos to the Hollywood Bowl for performing it before every concert.

Started during the Great Depression. Took our minds off it. Patriotism is the last bastion of the scoundrel just like racism is the last bastion of the left. I say get rid of it. Too bad it’s the blacks who push the envelope for which we should be grateful.

“A sporting event has nothing to do with patriotism.”

They are one of the few times 10 of thousands of Americans gather together, the anthem and the flag are reminders of the things and values Americans have in common.

Because in singing the National Anthem at a fun gathering we celebrate and remember we are free!

We are allowed to play sports and yell at players and umpires and eat or drink what and how much we want.

People fought and died and sacrificed much to allow us to gather together for fun like that.

The least we can do is take a few minutes to remember what they did because they did it for us to have the freedoms we have!

And they did it in the hopes of the continuation of the USofA.

Plus, it’s a tradition by now and breaking it would be a win for the anti American protesters. A statement of hatred and racism.

‘So that decent, God-fearing patriots will feel “included.”’

What? It’s not a silly liberal idea like that, a freaking participation trophy. It’s about honoring our heritage, our veterans, our freedom that was bought and paid for by people who gave all to ensure it. It’s about country and honor and integrity and grit and rugged individualism and blood and tears and faith and family. That it is being so misaligned and marginalized and disrespected is just grievous as hell and shows how sorry a place we have come to be in.

Liberals have miseducated millions of people about what it took to create and sustain this country. Moments taken to be reminded of that and honor it as a people are not trite and worthless to me.

I miss the good ol’ USA, where every shred of her history wasn’t being torn down, disrespected and crapped on every day by shallow, vindictive, selfish fools.
