Only half of Americas smallest businesses now offer health coverage to their workers because many say steady cost hikes have made it too expensive to afford a benefit that nearly all large employers still provide.
The Kaiser Family Foundation said Tuesday that 50 percent of companies with three to 49 employees offered coverage this year. Thats down from 59 percent in 2012 and 66 percent more than a decade ago.
Theres just not as much money around for compensation, including benefits, said Gary Claxton, a Kaiser vice president and lead author of the nonprofit health policy organizations annual health benefits study.
Employer-sponsored coverage is the most common form of health insurance in the United States, covering an estimated 151 million people under age 65, according to Kaiser. The federal Affordable Care Act requires all companies with 50 or more full-time employees to offer it.

Nobody should get “health benefits” from their work.
IF you want “health benefits” you buy them just like you buy car insurance.
No buy, no got.

It’s so simple and is the only path to restoration of our health freedom.
“Thats down from 59 percent in 2012 and 66 percent more than a decade ago.”
All by design, Comrades! All. By. Design.
I sound like a broken record, but managing a multi-million dollar business during the 0bama Years was a freakin’ NIGHTMARE!
I won’t go into detail, AGAIN, but man, it really, REALLY hurt our bottom line, our employee morale (Yeah - see how long your BEST employees stick around as you KEEP TAKING THINGS AWAY FROM THEM!) and we Managers were caught in the middle of this unwarranted and unwanted ABORTION!
Grrrr! FU John Roberts! FU!
“IF you want, ‘health benefits’ you buy them just like you buy car insurance.”
I agree, ONE HUNDRED PERCENT!
But - some of us were caught in this mess...flappin’ around like fish in a net!
except that current law has made that insurance useless... 15K year plus 5 figure deducts...
Its cheaper to pay cash.
Oh, no doubt!
I’m STILL suffering the aftershocks of even EXPLAINING 0bamacare to my employees...and I’ve been Retired for two years!
I have: Post Traumatic 0bamacare Syndrome!
*SMIRK* :)
How can the employees get it if even the boss can’t afford it?
I haven’t read the article yet. Let me guess, the guy from Kaiser wants more subsidies...?
The real objective of Obamacare is to create yet another reason for small businesses to be unviable to run, forcing more of the workforce into large corporations.
