When Talk Like a Pirate day comes around, make sure to take time to declare the metric system to be the scourge of the briny deep.

The large bolts on the CV hubs on Audis these days are typically something like 120 ft-lbs + 180 degrees. That’s a one-time use stretch bolt, and yes, I have a 5’ pipe section in the corner of the garage that goes over the handle of the heavy-duty 1/2” drive breaker bar for applying the torque to get that 180 degrees.

You aren’t kidding. Today’s cars either look like a tiny playschool toy or they look like an enormous ugly tennis shoe. I’ve been telling folks for years the auto companies and the sports shoe companies share the same designers.

A pound and a skosh per pint. There are 8.33#/gallon. This is important if you’re pumping water, which I’ve done a time or two, when the numbers really mattered. Like in large water cooled, chilled water HVAC systems.

Back in the late 70's or early 80's there was a push in this country to go metric. It failed miserably. No body of import wanted it. That is the common folk. Eventually all of the stupid dual signs disappeared. Thank God.

But, anything that is stupid and fails eventually finds a life in the future. Why? Because those reviving and promoting a failure think that it wasn't done right the previous time and this time the promoter are more intelligent and will make the same mistakes, but with flair and class. And, fail as well.

The metric system is evil... They introduced it Canada and we ended up paying more money for everything... It takes 3.79 litres to make a gallon of gas and gas is roughly $1.20 per litre on average in Canada... So we’re paying over $4 per gallon... But we’re quite happy because a litre of gas in only $1.20 or $1.30.... When we used the old imperial measurement we paid roughly the same amount for a gallon as Americans did... Could you imagine the outrage if Americans were paying $4.50 for a gallon of gas?

News flash.
Man Walks On The Moon 1969. We used the good old English /American measurement system.

To quote Grandpa Simpson, “The metric system is a tool of the devil! My car gets 40 rods to the hogshead and that’s the way I likes it.”

She may have a short in her center fuel tank. The resultant Kla-Bloo-ee will make you want to move. Can’t believe shot believes this shit but then contrived rumors are accepted as fact.

It’s nice to play with, but it’s cumbersome in some respects, at least in the manner in which it has typically been used (but need not be).

I mean, for God’s sake, having to go into the hundreds for height?

For some reason, only meters, centimeters, millimeters, kilometers have been used for length. There are plenty other gradations in between, yet metric nuts insist on measuring people’s height in centimeters. It’s a tiny unit smaller than an inch.

So, I am “178 cm” (one-hundred seventy-eight centimeters - 11 syllables) rather than just “5’10”” (5 feet 10 inches - 5 syllables) or even “70”” (seventy inches - 5 syl).

If you’re going to use metric, why not measure people with DECImeters?

Meanwhile, the “equivalent” of miles (2 syl) is kilometers (4 syl) - and again, it’s smaller than the mile, so speeds become large 3-digit numbers and long travels become behemoths of numbers and letters. Why not take the next power of 10?

Anyway, I don’t mind metric so much, but most measurement standards seem out of sync with the sizes they are representing. Use smaller numbers/bigger units.

There are two kind of countries. Those who use the metric system, and those who have been to the moon.

Or to thousands of an inch, called “mils”.

Confused me the first time in electronic design because in school, they never covered using 10ths of English.

But in electronics, and anything precisely machined for it, “mil” is “milli-inch”, not “millimeter”.

Instead of first and 10, in football, it will be first down and 9.144 meters to go.

No, it wouldn't. If sane people were to "metricize" football, the gridiron would be lengthened to 100m.

A meter isn’t based on the length of any common object, but it’s not arbitrary, either. It’s the length of a cube of a metric ton of water at standard temperature.

Years ago when the US tried (and failed) so make the metric system socially acceptable, Saturday Night Live ran a fake commercial introducing the Decibet - a metric alphabet with only 10 letters. Here is one of them:
